236 Hurumzi Hotel

An integral part of the skyline of Zanzibar, along with mosque minarets, Hindu temple towers, and church spires, is the Tower Top restaurant of 236 Hurumzi. The second tallest building in Stone Town Zanzibar, the hotel has been restored to its former glory when it was the residence of one of the richest men in the Swahili Empire. All the furnishings are original Zanzibari antiques of varied origins and styles that, together, create the impressions of Arabian.

The sixteen guestrooms are beautiful and romantic, each representing Zanzibari traditions in a distinct way. All rooms except for the Kipembe room are equipped with large stone bathtubs. Ceiling fans keep the guests cool along with the constant breeze on the upper floors. Second and first floor rooms as well as the South room are equipped with air conditioning for added comfort. The sultan-sized rooms on the first and second floors have 20 foot ceilings, carved doors, original stucco décor and hand painted glass lamps and window panes. All guest rooms have large Zanzibari beds complete with netting.

Overall Rating: ★★★ (3)

Energy Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We do most of our laundry by hand and not machine, We use energy saving bulbs throughout the hotel. Fuel lamps are used for emergency night lighting as a traditional alternative to electronic systems. Rooms are mostly equipped with air-conditioners, but we encourage the use of ceiling fans and water conservation by way of notices to guests to conserve water, which also conserves energy for pumping water

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Via staff memorandums we encourage staff to conserve water. We inform guests to re-use their towels if possible. Sheets are re-used as most guests stay only 2 nights average. Longer staying guests may request the sheets be changed, but usually we do not change sheets before three nights. This saves water and energy. Potted plants are watered by hand. We do supply some neighbours with water from our two wells as a goodwill gesture for immediate neighbours.

Disposal Rating: ★★ (2)
Staff Comment - Staff themselves recycle water bottles and other used containers from the hotel. We do have amenities in the rooms, but we support locally produced products with minimal packaging. We are in Stone Town and generally are required to use the local system for the disposal of rubbish. Certain items such as rubble are transported directly to land fills and or home construction sites belonging to staff.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Staff are made aware of controlling wastage in it’s various forms. This is largely to inspire good hygiene and promote pest control. The hotel contributes to local efforts to clean up the Stone Town via the Rotary Club and other organizations as well as participating directly in local government initiatives to promote a cleaner Stone Town via support for the Stone Town Heritage Society. When a local building collapsed in our neighbourhood we paid for the removal of all the rubble. We Also supported the construction of a local playground for children that was sponsored by the Rotary Club. Local efforts by Rotary to send special patients for treatment have also been supported by the hotel as well and the annual graduation ceremonies of schools in Stone Town and annual events sponsored by a local Islamic madrassa. On top of that I am an active member of the local employer’s association ZANEMA and am often called to participate in government workshops and seminars to focus on new labour policy for Zanzibar. I have been the ZANEMA Chairman for the last three years.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Our hotel is a restored group of mansions built in the 1800s. We have tried to respect the architecture and use local antique furnishings throughout the hotel. We use most of our supplies purchased locally as well as supporting women’s and AIDS organizations purchasing products they make for use in the hotel. This includes soaps from ZAPHA +, Kidoti women’s group soaps, Coconut fiber rugs woven by local blind persons organization. We also donate out old sheets and towel to the orphanage and to our staff. We promote batik cloth production with our own group of craftsmen who make all the batik cloth used in the rooms and for staff uniforms. I myself taught them batiking. In the past we supported a weaving project that was associated with members of IWWA in Ifakara. Much of the movement to keep Stone Town and Zanzibar hotels true to Zanzibar Style was inspired by our early efforts to promote and make successful Zanzibar Style in our hotel. Hotel staff are almost all from Zanzibar and Tanzania. I am the only non Tanzanian staff on duty for most of the year. We do have one consultant who works 3 months during our Christmas/ New Years season. He spends his time training chefs and local F&B personnel. Our reception staff are periodically sent to seminars for advanced training, as well as we frequently assist staff to pay for language and computer training courses. Our bookings officer was trained in computers from no experience at all with computers to being totally in charge of bookings for the hotel. He was gifted in English and had a bright personality that made such a step possible. Other staff who show promise will also receive such support.
