I have had the pleasure of visiting the Atlas Kasbah on several occasions. As a supporter of environmentally responsible tourism facilities, I can find no better example in Morocco. The owners, Hélène and Hassan have done a remarkable job starting with a construction using traditional materials to the application of alternative energy technologies which supplies 80% of their electrical needs. I remember arriving late one night in February when the outside temperatures were relatively cool. When I checked into my room I was pleased to see that it was quite warm and thanked Hassan for putting on the heat. I was immediately informed that it was not necessary to heat the rooms because of the use of natural materials which maintain their warmth, picked up during the sunny days, throughout the night. That the same phenomenon applies in the summertime. The cooler nights keep the rooms fresh all day long.

The location of the Kasbah is absolutely spectacular. It is surrounded by the endemic Argane tree forest, effectively a landscape that can be found no other place on the planet. The exceptional health values of the Argane Tree have become increasingly well-known over the past decade. It is also possible to visit a Feminine Cooperative where women prepare the argane oil with the same techniques that have been used for generations. This experience is just one of many ways in which the Atlas Kasbah maintains its strong ties to the local communities. Most of the staff come from the adjacent villages and much of the organic foods consumed on-site are prepared by local farmers.

While architectural and community based attributes of the Atlas Kasbah reflect the criteria of a sustainable tourism facility, I could not overlook the warm and hospitable greeting I received. Both Hélène and Hassan have extensive professional training in tourism development and hospitality. This is clearly evident in both the level of high quality services as well as the attention to detail. I week at the Kasbah is both a wonderful introduction to Moroccan culture and community as well as athe ultimate relaxation in a peaceful and pristine environment.
