Barefoot Resort - Havelock
The Andaman Islands, India's best-kept secret. Stunning beaches, aquamarine coral lagoons, lush green rainforest, active volcanoes, swimming elephants, and giant fish. Experience the unexplored beauty of these islands at the Barefoot Group's eco-retreat, 'barefoot at Havelock'. Located exclusively on what TIME Magazine rated as the best beach in Asia, the resort is set in tropical rainforest and fruit trees behind a pristine 2 km stretch of white sand at the quirkily named Beach No. 7 on Havelock Island. Conde Nast Traveler USA edition in September 2007 stated that the beach is one of the 30 best beaches in the world.
The resort consists of 19 beautifully designed and environmentally sensitive cottages hidden in the tropical foliage. The resort and cottages are spread over 8 acres, thus giving you an uninterrupted feeling of nature and privacy. The barefoot philosophy propagates the use of only natural indigenous materials in the living and recreational spaces.
You're very cut off from the rest of the world: no television, newspapers, internet or (sometimes) telephone - bliss for some! This is also part of a conscious effort to take their guests out of their cottages and experience the beauty of Havelock Island. Room service is not provided as the cottages are far apart from the kitchen and also because they have a wonderful atmospheric lounge and restaurant where they encourage their guests to mingle and sit back and enjoy a tall drink and a delicious meal with some relaxing music.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Energy Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We have informed all staff members that during low occupancy not to switch on the generator during the afternoons, and have bought a low capacity generator to be run during low season.
We have special key tags that need to be inserted to switch on the lights and on removal the power supply is turned off.
Use of alternative energy source: We are installing solar water heaters in all our cottages. Solar heaters are already used in the kitchen area
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Water wastage management:
Water is the most important resource on the surface of earth. Only as much as 0.008% of water on the planet is available for human consumption and to make more of it, takes energy that pollutes the environment. Therefore water wastage management is probably one of the most important and most relevant aspects of running a hotel.
We use water from a captive in-house source. All our water is drawn from a perennial mountain spring. This feeds into a pond and is then piped for guest and kitchen facilities. So we do not draw from the village piped water supply. We also harvest rainwater – we have two large ponds.
We have a RO plant to provide safe drinking water to guests (and minimise plastic use through mineral water bottles) and to ensure kitchen preparations are done in safe water. Reject from the RO plant is used for gardening and has been tested as 100% safe for the purpose
Flush cisterns have been modified to require less water per flush (lowering of float stop position through introduction of a permanently placed foreign object)
All kitchen and shower-waste water goes into septic tanks which then leach into the ground through a natural purification process after passing through ‘fat traps’ etc. Thus the ground water gets recharged.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Reuse and recycle material:
No we do not recycle at present, as such facilities are not available on the island.
We have purchased a plastic recycling machine through a director of Barfoot and the same has arrived at Havelock, We are in the process of forming a partnership with the government to devise a comprehensive waste management plan for Havelock Island, and have received panchayat permission for installation of the recycling unit in Havelock – the plant will take charge of all plastic waste on the island, not just from our resort.
Recycling bin and sorting recyclable items
Yes, we segregate waste. Edible waste is fed to our pigs. Glass Bottle waste is sold to ANIIDCO agents. Plastic waste is being stockpiled for the recycling plant.
Composting organic material:
Composting is the biological decomposition of solid organic materials by bacteria, fungi, and other organisms into a soil-like product. Compost can be used to enrich garden soils. Compost not only nourishes the soil but also helps increase moisture and decreases the need for additional watering. We compost organic and garden waste. Our food waste is fed into an in-house piggery. We use organic compost in our plant nursery and around trees. We also use elephant dung as an organic fertiliser. The dung comes from our own resident elephant.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Organic and Eco friendly food:
Most of our food – vegetarian and meats are sourced locally and come from fertiliser and pesticide free sources. We also grow some of our own food in our own farm. Chickens used are free-range, pigs are our own. We do offer organic food to our guests.
Tell our guests its “Good to be Green”:
We do not communicate in writing inside the resort. We however have an environmental education center that we have set up which caters to the entire island, and this has much written and visual collateral. Inside the resort, we have books for reference and we have a resident naturalist who explains things.
Tell our staff its “Good to be Green”:
Yes, our staff is aware. They do regular beach clean-ups, volunteer at ANET, and at the EEC.
Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have a Environment education building for awareness of the unique flora and fauna and education for local children and guest alike. Nearly 95% of our produce is brought from local shops. 95% of our staff are locals from nearby Islands. Barefoot has planted more than 100 endemic trees on land owned by it in the Andamans. Of these, at least 400 have survived and flourishing. We do not provide any service on the beach so as to not encourage locals to commercialize the beach and create litter. Our staff is actively involved in beach cleaning activities conducted at regular intervals.
