base2stay Kensington is the original luxury limited service hotel which means it offers a 4* hotel environment for its guests at an affordable price. Since opening in early 2006, the base2stay ethos - "the bill you pay at check-out is what you thought you'd pay when you checked in" - has appealed to design conscious, independent, value-orientated guests, looking for a hotel offering style and comfort.

The concept for base2stay is simple; by cutting out traditional hotel facilities such as restaurant, gym and bar, base2stay is able to keep its room rates low whilst still offering high-spec rooms and suites. Instead of these traditional facilities, the hotel is located in a busy stylish neighbourhood buzzing with a choice of bars, restaurants, gyms and boutiques for guests to visit.

All the base2stay rooms and suites offer mini-kitchens with microwave, sink, kettle and fridge, encouraging guests to buy food at local grocery stores and delivery restaurants. Each room has a 'base directory', offering an interactive on-screen local guide to services and facilities, allowing guests to avoid expensive and limited room-service options normally found in a hotel.

The hotel offers air-conditioned interior-designed rooms with high quality IT including flat screen TV's with free internet access, as well as high speed VPN broadband, ample power points (with European 220v), convenient workspace and storage cleverly designed under beds, bathrooms with power showers, baths or wet rooms, mini-kitchen, a daily maid service and most importantly, a comfortable night's sleep. Free Wi-Fi is available in all rooms.

Staff Comment - We are a member of Green Tourism/Green Business and Hospitable Climates. Sensors and timers are used throughout the building (external, common, stores, public rooms, corridors and back of house areas). Keycard controlled power switches are used in all rooms. Energy efficient bulbs including LEDís are used throughout the building. State-of-the-art Daiken power saving, heat recovery system is in use for heating and cooling with a master central control for added efficiency. Modern efficient Andrews water heaters and pumps work only on demand are in operation. Good housekeeping is encouraged through continual training on how to use energy and prevent waste. Usage is constantly checked every month by Hospitable Climate and Business Costs Consultants to measure reduction and efficiency. A written Green Policy and evidence folder is in place to encourage responsible energy usage by both guests and staff. Minimal lighting is used between 9pm and 7am through timers. There are no large public areas needing light or heat. Equipments in use, where applicable are always on power-saving mode.

Staff Comment - Single lever taps with bath tap restrictors. There is no in-house restaurant, bar, kitchen or health club. Water consumption is frequently monitored by Hospitable Climates and Business Costs Consultants. Bed sheets are changed every three days for stays and towels are only changed on request. We use an environmentally conscious linen processing company that uses biodegradable detergents to process linen. We use environmentally friendly fine fibre cleaning cloths and non bleach based cleaning products. There is a single mains entry to the building. Use of tank storage water, instead of direct from mains. There is no central heating system.

Staff Comment - The hotel team are well-trained in being environmentally aware. This is a priority for base2stay as, by design, we discourage waste of any kind. Most of the waste produced by our operation is cardboard and plastic based, by working with a disposal company and shortly with the councilís new commercial recycling unit, we ensure most of the waste produced by us is recycled although the waste produced is only a small amount due to our non F&B operation. We pay a recycling levy to our waste disposal company and, where possible, use 100% recycled products such as toilet paper and stationery paper. We use green paper for stationery, and sheets are used on both sides before disposed of for recycling. On average one delivery a day. Glass bottles are not used throughout the hotel.

Staff Comment - Our Green Policy is available in our green folder in reception, on our website, on the in-room TV directory, the in-room paper directory and in the welcome letter. Our staff training and operations manual also has a section dedicated to our green operation. We only use fair-trade products in our hospitality welcome tray. All mechanical equipments work on demand to save energy and maximise efficiency. We encourage guests and staff to Ďthink greení at all times. We promote environmentally friendly transport options such as bike hire companies, and green and carbon neutral taxi firms. Guest awareness on areas like the use of towels, linen, soap, sink and bath plugs are also found through our welcome letter and the various directories.

Staff Comment - By virtue of our concept, we encourage our guests to explore the local area and use local businesses. Because we donít have a restaurant, bar, health club or breakfast room, we offer guests details on small businesses such as cafes, grocery stores and restaurants in the neighbourhood. In many cases, our guests get a discount if they use local outlets, with no added incentive to the hotel, making it a true partnership and a win-win formula for everyone. We advertise and expose local businesses for free through our on-screen TV directory, Reception & Concierge Service, welcome letter and paper directory. Ensuring that we provide an unrivalled service to our local community and businesses. We support local events and make a donation to charity from time to time. Unlike other hotels, we donít charge our guests corkage or otherwise for bringing back drink or food to the hotel. We constantly train and test our team on where and what to recommend to guests. Many of our staff live locally and a few cycle to work.
