Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have a written procedure and systems in place to reduce electricity and gas usage and reduce our overall carbon footprint. Electricity, gas and carbon emissions are recorded daily. The hotel and spa are fully insulated to industrial specifications. Staff receive an Environmental Induction when they join to train them about our environmental practices. We have motion sensor lighting in some public areas, and all guest bedrooms have key-card activated electrical systems. All lighting in the hotel is energy saving types; appliances and equipment are purchased with energy saving in mind. Through signage and information boards, guests are made aware of our energy saving policies. All managers have received external environmental awareness training, other staff have achieved their BTEC in Sustainable Tourism. We have solar panels which heat our outdoor swimming pools, and we are investing in a new heat recovery system for our refrigerators.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All staff are made aware of our water saving initiatives at their environmental induction. All toilets are dual-flush, urinals are manual flush, public taps are sensor activated, all taps and showers are low flow with aerators. We have a written water saving policy which also states what can and can't enter the water drainage system. Guests have cards in their rooms explaining that their sheets and towels will only be changed upon request. We have rain water collecting tanks under one of our tennis courts which is used for watering the gardens. We do not have a Xeric garden, although all planting is chosen to suit the windswept and saline landscape.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have recycling bins throughout the hotel for guests and staff alike. Paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and tins are all recycled, plus more unusual items such as batteries, fabric, sun loungers, mobile phones, CDs and printer cartridges. All staff are made aware of our recycling initiatives at their Environmental Induction. When ordering from suppliers, reduced packaging is requested, and it must be of a type than can be recycled or reused - no polystyrene! All garden and some kitchen waste is composted in our 7 compost bins. We have a written waste reduction policy, and strict rules in place to keep recyclables, hazardous, sanitary and controlled waste streams separate. All guests are made aware of our recycling schemes through signage and our green notice board.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All staff receive an Environmental Induction when they start, and DVDs are shown to staff such as Inconvenient Truth and How Cuba Survived Peak Oil. We were the first hotel in the country to employ a full time Sustainability Manager. We have a Green Team with a member from every department who meet regularly to discuss the hotel's sustainable initiatives. The hotel supports Cornwall Wildlife Trust, Surfers Against Sewage and the local children's hospice. Unwanted furniture, sheets, curtains, crockery etc. is donated to St. Petrocs homeless charity. Whenever an appliance needs replacing, a more environmentally friendly version is sought. The hotel has adopted the local Mawgan Porth beach and holds beach cleans four times a year involving staff, guests and the local community. The data collected from these beach cleans is sent to the Marine Conservation Society. We are constantly improving our environmental performance, as shown by our decision to implement ISO14001, invest in a heat recapture system for our refrigerators and we have just switched to a renewable green energy tariff for our electricity. Our green mezzanine informs guests of our sustainable initiatives, and our eco-awards are displayed near to the reception area.
Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We promote local attractions and amenities to our guests, and use local suppliers and companies ourselves for everything possible from food to printing brochures. We have a policy in place to employ local staff. We support the local wildlife trust and held a Car Free Day at the hotel with them to help promote local activities that leave no carbon footprint. Our written hotel Philosophy teaches staff to respect their surroundings and cherish their world. In January all staff pledged an environmental 'promise' for the year ahead to help them to reduce their own impact on the environment. Guests are informed about our buy local policy through our menus and on our website. Our environmental policy is also on our website.
