Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – All electric use at the Black Sheep Inn has been monitored for the last five years in order to prepare for going off the grid. Current electrical use s approximately 12 kwh per day for the entire facility. All light bulbs on the property are compact fluorescent, computers have been replaced by laptops, coffee is ground by hand and stove top percolators are being used in brewing, cooking is done on gas and showers are heated by gas, laundry is washed by hand and line dried. Solar panels power a small submersible pump directly with no batteries, When it is sunny the pump pushes water over 200 feet up the hill to storage tanks. This water is used to irrigate our organic gardens, for the fountain of youth/sheep watering trough and for the highest solar panel powered water slide in the world. Guests are asked to conserve energy with signage throughout the property. A new hot tub is heated with the same woodstove that heats the sauna using a thermal siphon, no pumps, no electricity. Black Sheep Inn has an extensive Eco Manual that outlines various practices on the property. This Manual is a work in progress and is constantly changing with new improvement.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment – Black Sheep Inn has half a dozen water meters for monitoring various water use. There are 4 water sources – village water system (of which Andres is the elected President), a neighbors spring, several roof water collectors, and te solar direct water pump described above in the energy section. Black Sheep Inn only uses dry composting toilets therefore water is conserved and NO black water is produced. All other waste water is processed using grey water settling tanks, charcoal filters and plant filter beds. Roof water is collected and reused for hand washing using biodegradable hand soaps and then drain directly into a small garden so that they are permanently irrigated and moist. Sheets and towels are not changed on a daily basis only on request. All cleaning products are purchased in bulk (5 gallon jugs) and are biodegradable; including shampoo and conditioner which are provided in refillable dispensers in all showers.

As stated above all toilets are dry composting toilets. Grey water is processed and used on site Products are brought in bulk to reduce packaging. Water is purified on site via Ozone and included in the proce of accommodation. Lunches are packed in unbleached brown paper. Toilet paper and napkins and business cards are made of recycled paper.
