Brompton Lakes

Brompton Lakes is an exclusive development of luxury lodge-style holiday homes situated just two miles from the historic market town of Richmond on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Set in 26 acres of privately owned land, the 5-star lodges are built on the shores of two lakes and are surrounded by woodland and open countryside. The site is directly on the Coast to Coast long distance footpath and ideally placed for walking, cycling and other outdoor activities. There is also a tennis court, free mountain bike hire and small rowing boats on the lakes.

The lodges themselves are both distinctive and contemporary to look at – with their unique convex living plant roofs and large glass frontages – yet have been constructed to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Each one sleeps up to six people and has been individually designed with bespoke kitchens and bathrooms, wood-burning stoves, solid wood floors and carefully selected fittings and pieces of furniture. The lodges also have their own private decking overhanging the water and the areas around them have been sensitively landscaped for both botanical interest and privacy.

The development has been recognised for a number of green accolades including: a Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award; a silver medal at the Green Apple Awards for the Built Environment and Architectural Heritage 2009; and recognition in the 2009 Yorkshire Post Environment Awards and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Pro Yorkshire Awards 2009 in the design and innovation category.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The lodges have been constructed to be as energy efficient as possible. They have double-insulated walls and sedum green roofs, which not only helps them blend into their natural environment but also acts as a second insulate to retain heat in the winter while keeping the accommodation pleasantly cool in the warmer months. Large glass windows and sliding doors also increase passive solar gain.

The lakes themselves provide the main source for the site’s heating as water is evaporated from them to operate the innovative geo-thermal heating system. It is one of the first systems of this kind to use geo-thermal heat pumps to provide both hot water and under floor heating on any UK holiday development. A nominal amount of electricity is required to operate the pump.

Each lodge has an eco log burning stove, which are super efficient and retain heat for several hours. At present the wood for the stoves comes from timber that has been felled or thinned during the site’s construction. When this supply is exhausted, firewood will be obtained from a sustainable source about 1 mile away.

All the light bulbs on site are low energy and the lodges are equipped with eco-friendly appliances such as eco kettles. Dishwashers, washing machines etc have all been chosen with energy efficiency in mind and have the top industry ratings.
Staff are aware of the need to be energy conscious and are all committed to the green principles underpinning the development.

Water Rating: ★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - The site sits over a large natural aquifer which provides spring water through a bore hole and all water for the lodges comes from this source. Sewerage is all treated on site and the water is of an approved standard (by the Environment Agency) to be put back into the river.
Dual flush toilets have been installed throughout the development to save water and domestic appliances (kettles, washing machines etc) have been selected with this criteria in mind.
Complimentary eco-friendly toiletries and cleaning products are provided for guests and eco-friendly cleaning products are used exclusively as part of the regular cleaning routine.
Staff are aware of the need to conserve water and are all committed to the green principles underpinning the development.
Plans are currently underway to collect and use rainwater.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Comprehensive recycling facilities for both guests and staff are available on site for glass, plastics, tins and paper. We are currently working towards having a composting scheme so that food waste can also be collected and used.
Products used on the site are selected to avoid excessive waste, including less packaging. Recycled toilet paper is provided in each of the lodges, together with complimentary eco friendly toiletries and cleaning products. The staff also use eco-friendly products for general on-site cleaning.
Some of the furnishings are made out of recycled products, for example wastepaper bins and placemats made out of recycled newspapers.

Products in the lodges (tableware, linen as well as furniture) are all high quality, not only for aesthetic reasons but also to ensure longevity. In addition, some pieces of furniture are antiques or older items that have been restored and then hand-painted by the development’s interior designer. This avoids the over-use of new or replacement products that use valuable resources in their construction and retailing.
As with other ‘green’ concepts, staff are all supportive of the need to recycle wherever possible.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - The small but dedicated team of staff at Brompton Lakes is fully committed to the principles of eco living which is integral to the day-to-day running of the site. As the lodges are newly constructed and furnished, environmentally friendly items (such as light bulbs, kettles, appliances etc) have all been selected from the outset.
The lodges themselves have also been built to be as environmentally friendly as possible and utilise the very latest in green construction techniques. They are made largely from sustainable timber and glass with living plant roofs.

The green philosophy underpinning the development is communicated to guests through all the promotional literature and website. Once on holiday, guests are encouraged to leave their car behind and either walk or use the site’s complimentary mountain bikes. Brompton Lakes is situated in beautiful cycling and walking country and lies on the popular Coast to Coast long distance footpath. Guests are also made aware of recycling facilities and logs for the eco burners are provided free of charge.

Protection Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Brompton Lakes is situated on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, close to the historic town of Richmond. The area offers abundant leisure and recreational opportunities, which are communicated to guests (pre-arrival) on the website and (while on holiday) in a visitors’ book, available in each lodge.
Brompton Lakes is committed to promoting the local economy and enhancing the area’s popularity as a tourist destination. For this reason the website has links to many nearby places to visit, recreational activities, and places to eat, drink, and shop. Food and items in the welcome hampers are all bought locally and, where possible, made locally. The site itself does not provide shopping or eating facilities therefore encouraging guests to use nearby shops and amenities.

Employment opportunities have also been created by the initiative. Four permanent members of staff have been recruited (including a full-time resident warden) and services such as grounds maintenance and cleaning are all sourced locally. The construction of the lodges has also provided work for local people and the contract trades.
The landscape itself has been greatly enhanced by the initiative. Formerly a commercial fishing lake, the 26-acre site has been brought back from a largely derelict state into somewhere that people would want to spend their holidays. There is an ongoing landscape management plan to improve the area even further that so far has led to the planting of a large number of indigenous species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers. The lakes themselves have been developed as wildlife habitats.

Members of staff are always happy to talk to guests about the different species that can be seen around the site and plans are currently underway to provide a wildlife information board and signage. A wildlife record journal is located in reception for visitors to fill in.
