Can Martí
Can Martí is an oasis of calm in the north of Ibiza. The estate, which is more than 400 years old, and its four guest houses were built and restored according to ecological principles. The other appeal of this typical example of Ibizan architecture lies in its design full of purity, simplicity and elegant forms.
The houses are spacious and cosy allowing guests to feel at home. Each house has its own outdoor space and each one feels like a private “habitat”. The estate has more than 16 hectares of protected grounds, where guests are free to roam around and explore nature.
There is a working farm, which is run ecologically, with all sorts of things for guests to discover; for example, the new vegetable garden, which is based on the model of Gaspar Caballero de Segovia’s “Parades en Crestall”, the aromatic herb garden, the hammam that is about to be opened and a farm shop selling homemade products and other organic items. You will soon make friends with the owners, other guests and even with the animals (a donkey, a dog and a cat).

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We only use low energy light bulbs Our photovoltaic equipment consists of 44 x 110 Watt panels with 3 inverters and produces more than 50% of our power requirements. With solar panels and vacuum tubes we produce about 85% of our needs of warm water. Our guests receive the following information:
The SUN provides a part of the ENERGY for our power supply system. Do not waste power.
An excessively high demand on the batteries (11) will shorten their life. Avoid using highly
consuming devices. The exterior light switch is located inside, please make sure that it is turned
off during the night.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have a low-flow shower system. Some of our antique style tabs (English design!) to not allow to connect low flow gear. We systematically collect all the rainwater from the roofs. The precious liquid runs first into our "cisterna" (a pear shaped underground deposit that nearly all old houses on Ibiza possess), witch has a capacity of about 25'000 litres. The overflow is canalized into a open air deposit that can contain about 160'000 litres and witch we use occasionally as a natural swimming pool.
From there the rainwater is pumped into our irrigation system.
Used water from the kitchens and showers first passes through a filter to remove grease and soap.
Then it passes through a biological purification plant with plants that feed on organic matter suspended
in water and thus partially remove it.
The purified water runs into a pond with fish, frogs and coots (our biotope).
From there it is taken and used for watering. Wastewater from the toilets runs through another pipe to a tank
with three chambers where the solid particles settle. The liquid part runs into a pool where it
undergoes an initial filtering stage with floating plants. It then follows the same route as the water
from the kitchens and showers: it passes through the biological purification plant and ends up in our biotope.
Drip system and micro-sweating tube is used for our vegetable garden and orchard.
We deliberately choose plants that need not much water.
We have a compost toilet near the main house and invite our guests to experience it.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We recycle everything that can be recycled (paper, glass, metal, plastic, batteries etc.)
Our guests get detailed information of what can be recycled and containers for everything are at their disposal. Organic waste is turned into compost. Food rests go to the chicken. I think we recycle a 100% of our recyclable waste. We also try to avoid to buy goods that have problematic wrapping. (Drinks in cans, plastic bottles (we drink water from the tab and tell our guests to do the same).
