Cotton Tree Lodge

At Cotton Tree Lodge you can get in tune with nature, relax and experience somewhere completely different. With the beautiful rainforest as a backdrop guests have the unique opportunity of connecting with the people and culture of Belize in a very relaxed and natural way. The lodge provides a great base from which to explore the wilderness knowing that on your return you will always find comfortable luxury and the kind of hospitality that will make you feel like part of the family.

The “cabanas” are built well above ground with the majority nestled in the wild fig trees that line the river's edge. Each one has hot and cold running water with a private bath, bay leaf thatched roofs, eco-friendly flush toilets, screened windows and ceiling fans. Some even have spacious private decks with hammocks that overlook the river.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Cotton Tree Lodge is off the grid and uses a combination of solar, battery, and generator power. We try to reduce our energy usage wherever possible, and we encourage guests to do their part by turning off lights and fans when leaving their rooms.

Cotton Tree’s buildings are screened with traditional thatch roofs and well-suited to the climate. There is no heat or air conditioning, just ceiling fans and lots of cross ventilation. Compact florescent builds are used throughout the property.

Water Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Cotton Tree Lodge uses biodegradable laundry detergent, cleaners use vinegar instead of harsh chemicals whenever possible. Complimentary shampoos and soaps in guest rooms are biodegradable as well.

To conserve water, guests are asked to signal when they want new towels by leaving them on the floor. Rainwater is collected in tanks for cooking. The decision to use native plants in the landscaping reduces the need for irrigation.

Disposal Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - Cotton Tree Lodge composts kitchen waste, uses biodegradable laundry soap, and reduces trash whenever possible. Glass drink bottles are exchanged at the wholesalers and reused.

Plastic and paper are difficult to recycle in Belize so the lodge tries to utilize double-sided printing, and encourages guests to refill their water bottles rather than throwing them out. Disposable plates/cups/silverware are almost never used. Picnics are always sent with reusable plastic plates, metal silverware, and cloth napkins.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Staff is encouraged to compost and be mindful of water usage. The lodge tries to purchase more environmentally friendly items such as compact florescent bulbs, solar power, energy efficient washing machines, and composting toilets.

Guests are told about the more visible efforts, such as the solar panels and composting toilets. Guests are encouraged to reduce their impact by turning off lights and fans when not in use, and opting for refillable water bottles rather than disposable ones. Cotton Tree Lodge is marketed as an “eco-lodge”.

Protection Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - All guest excursions are focused on the local environment and community. Guests visit waterfalls, caves, Mayan ruins, wildlife reserves, and local homes and villages.

The business purchases as much as possible locally, and is currently encouraging neighbouring farmers to grow crops for the lodge kitchen. Most staff members come from nearby villages. CTL has a strong partnership with an NGO called Sustainable Harvest International, which teaches sustainable agriculture techniques to local farmers. SHI has started a demonstration kitchen garden on the CTL grounds. Cotton Tree Lodge uses produce from the garden in its restaurant and SHI holds workshops and trainings there.
