Estancia Huechahue

Estancia Huechahue (pronounced "way-cha-way"!) is a working cattle ranch in Argentine Patagonia. 4 generations of the Wood family have worked on these 15,000 acres of Patagonian Steppe to produce a self-sufficient oasis and thriving cattle operation. Today Jane Wood Williams runs the estancia and has been welcoming guests since 1990.

Life at Huechahue is always an adventure, often involving horses. Patagonia is unfeasibly beautiful, rugged and wild. Huechahue maintains traditional values and customs whilst welcoming visitors into a unique world where horses and cattle still roam free and food is home grown

There are three guest lodges just a stroll across the lawn from the main farmhouse. They have eight twin/double rooms, all with bathroom en-suite and there are communal sitting room areas in each cabin.

Whilst staying at Huechahue, meals are usually served in the dining room of the main house and guests gather for drinks in front of the fire in the living room. Alternatively they make use of the 'quincho', the function room, with an open fire pit perfect for 'asados' and dancing if the occasion arises!

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We do not have mains electricity. We have our own water driven turbine and a wind generator. The supply is limited so energy awareness is paramount.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We are a farm in a semi desert area. We work hard to keep domestic water usage to a minimum as all water is used for irrigation on pastures.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We are responsible for dealing with our own rubbish we have no collection service. Therefore we make major efforts to keep waste to a minimum. We are also fairly self sufficient regarding producing our own food so we do not have much in the way of disposable containers and packaging. We have compost but we also have pigs who eat any food rubbish and then we make them into sausages, hams and salamis.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We do not have eco-certifications but our remote location means that it is necessary for everyone to be aware of saving water and electricity and producing as little as possible rubbish and environmental damage.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Employees are all local, all food not home produced is bought locally. Guests are only taken to places where locally produced products are sold.
