Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - - 8 solar panels are currently feeding back into the power grid. A further 8 panels are to be installed in 2010. We do not have the special room key light extinguishers in place but each cabin is switched off at the main power board when not in use.
Water Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - All water needs are provided on site via spring and rainwater collection.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - There is no council pick-up of waste at ES so we are very conscious of what has to go to the tip!
As an artist I collect plastic waste (ie bottle lids) for colour and various packaging for shape and reusability. Much of which is recreated in workshops and costuming over the year.
All compost waste goes either to the chooks or to the extensive worm farm for worm casting and liquid usage in the gardens. We have almost given up burning garden waste preferring to chip it and mulch it thus adding to the biomass of the soil structure.
There are communal recycling bins available and guests are encouraged to utilize them.

Staff Comment - This part of the business is waiting an energy injection from my daughter presently doing a masters in Holistic Science via Schumarcher Collage in Devon UK. Her under graduate studies are in Social Ecology and Permiculture management.
Protection Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - There is a productive veggie garden in operation at ES most of the year round. Orchard plantings include over 35 semi-tropical fruits from all over the world. Not all garden plants are local but the plantings in areas that are being regenerated back to original rainforest are endemic to the area.
I am president of the local Land Care operation, which is working towards stabilizing the local water ways and steep banks.
