Gayana Eco Resort

Gayana Eco Resort rests serenely at the edges of a tropical Jungle island just off the coast of Borneo. 44 over water villas are designed to enhance the soothing sounds of the surf below, while capturing the enduring vistas of Mt.Kinabalu on the horizon.

At its heart, the resort is about protecting and re-generating precious Marine Ecology, and the only property to feature its own Marine Ecology Research Centre passionately propagating endangered Giant Clams and restoring coral reefs; where guests of all ages participate in restoring vibrant life back to once damaged ocean floors.

The Solace Spa offers native Borneo facials, massage and body treatments in spa suites. Malaysia’s finest Chinese Seafood restaurant, Alu-Alu features spectacular over-water seating, an encyclopaedic menu of specialized cuisine and the freshest seafood from our own organic fish farm. Western Fusion is presented at Macac, Poolside Restaurant, with its towering wood Pizza Oven.

At the edge of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, off the coast of Malaysia Borneo, 15-minute boat ride to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu International Airport: 2.5miles, 15 minutes.

Striking the perfect balance of forward thinking ecology and indulgent luxury, Gayana pampers both the body and the enlightened soul.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)

Energy Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - As we are situated on an island, our resort is powered by our own generator set and we do the most we can to reduce consumption by using energy saving light bulbs, automatic light extinguishing by special room keys. Our staffs are also educated to save energy whenever possible.

Water Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Being on an island, we have our own reservoir which collects rain water and water supply tanks to ensure constant supply of water. We’ve recently installed our own water treatment water plant to take it a step further in an eco way. Now our water is recycled into ‘Grey Water’ for the purposes of toilet flushing & watering plants. Guests have cards in their rooms explaining that their sheets and towels will only be changed upon request

Disposal Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We always encourage our staff to reduce wastage. We also have some basic composting techniques for the re-sage of organic material in our landscape. We strongly encourage our staff to separate recyclable rubbish from non-recyclable rubbish. As we are on an island, we ensure our rubbish is safely transported back to the mainland for proper disposal.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Marine Ecology Research Centre (M.E.R.C.)
Gayana Eco Resort’s eco-friendly aspects and green practices are mainly from its Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC). Equipped with full research facilities and resident qualified Marine Biologists. There is also a MERC Auditorium that seats 40 which shows an educational video (multi-lingual) on Marine Life Conservation and MERC’s activities. Here at MERC, we take a step futher than claiming to be and working towards being “environmentally friendly”, “sustainable development”, “eco-friendly”, “marine conservation” and other usual terms we often hear. At MERC, we actually produce life, life of endangered species, species that are destined for extinction if nothing drastic is done. We not only develop or use our resources wisely; we actually return back to nature what we lost through our greed and ignorance.

Gayana Eco Resort is committed to environmental sustainability. This is reflected through our environmental education programme, environment protection policy, environment conservation and restoration programmes.
• Protection Policy
- We do not allow fishing within our area
- We do not serve any Shark Fin Soup in our resorts
- We only provide non-motorized water sports within our area

• Conservation and Preservation
- We protect what we have inherited and one programme Marine Ecology Research Centre (MERC) has in place is to produce fish fry for culture for seafood restaurants with the objective to reduce the stress on the natural population
- Our Chinese Seafood Restaurant, Alu-Alu only serves fresh fish raised from our very own fish farm which then does not have an impact on the natural population of the sea.

• Propagation
- We actively propagate numerous endangered species like Giant Clams for restocking back into the sea. Other propagation projects include coral reef and various species of fish.
- We have successfully propagated all 7 out of the 8 species of Giant Clams found in our waters in the world.

• Coral Reef Preservation and Restoration
- We collect broken coral fragments for re-planting and restore coral reef ecosystems by building reefs using electrolysis to ensure faster coral regeneration and survival in poor water conditions.
- We are the first in Malaysia to have the Biorock Project. Sunken structures in our waters are covered with a wire mesh and low voltage electricity to run through these wires (electrolysis). Corals then are replanted on these wire mesh which can speed growth up to 6 times the normal rate.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We promote local attractions as we offer dives and excursions to all the other islands and reefs within the Tunku Abdul Rahman park. We also offer our guests guided jungle trekking to show them the wonderful flora and fauna we have on our island. Guests are educated on our protection programs and we actively promote to guests to be involved with our programmes. Some of the activities that we provide complimentary are such as Coral Planting & Fish Feeding. We also try our best to use local suppliers and companies for everything possible. We actively employ local staff. We support and care for our ‘Sabah Parks’ by only providing non-motorized water sports and only consuming fish raised from our own in-house fish farm.
