Great Ocean Ecolodge
The Great Ocean Ecolodge is a magnificent multi award-winning environmentally sustainable guest house within the grounds of The Cape Otway Centre for Conservation Ecology. Adjoining the Great Otway National Park and close to the Great Ocean Walk, the Ecolodge is certified as an Advanced Ecotourism destination.

The Ecolodge has only five bedrooms, so every visit is unique and personal, particularly if you choose to book the Ecolodge exclusively. Bedrooms are private and peaceful, furnished with a comfortable bed, crisp clean linen, and timeless antiques and the ensuite bathrooms are equipped with fluffy towels and an assortment of locally made natural soaps and shampoos. From every window the views over the Otway Ranges or kangaroo meadows are breathtaking and the dawn chorus is magical.

The wonderful chefs create magnificent feasts from fresh regional produce, much of it grown in the Ecolodge's own kitchen garden. Breakfast and dinner are served in the Great Hall and are always a wonderful occasion. You may choose to dine together at the massive dining table, or more intimately.

The wild kangaroos often gather nearby to graze in the early mornings and evenings. Watching the young bucks play-fighting and the does tending their joeys is a very special experience. The Great Ocean Ecolodge is fully licensed and offers a range of superb wines from wineries in the Otways and beyond.

Powered entirely by the sun, and designed with passive solar principles, the Ecolodge collects its water from the skies and leaves an almost imperceptible footprint upon the earth. You will enjoy the hot showers and the glow of the reading light so much more, knowing that they are environmentally sound!

Ecology Experiences, exclusive to Great Ocean Ecolodge guests, offer outstanding opportunities for observing kangaroos, koalas and indigenous wild animals in their natural habitat (complete details are included in the Ecology Experiences Program). The Nature Studies Room and the Library are wonderful resources for checking on sightings and catching up on the finer points of natural history.

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The Great Ocean Ecolodge runs entirely from solar power generated on site from our photovoltaic system.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The Great Ocean Ecolodge collects all its own water on site from the pristine rainfall of the Otways. Indigenous flora is used in all landscaping to minimise water use. All waste water is managed on site via an aerobic treatment system, the safe, treated water is then used to maintain a green fire break lawn to the North of the Ecolodge.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All food scraps are composted to fertilise the vegetable gardens or fed to the chickens who provide our guests with delicious fresh eggs daily. We select products which are not over packaged and source as much produce as possible locally to reduce 'food miles'.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Sustainability tours are available to introduce guests to the sustainability aspects of the Great Ocean Ecolodge. The Ecolodge is integrated within a Conservation Ecology Centre providing outstanding opportunities for guests to participate in eco-activities.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Our region is magnificent and we take care to showcase this to our guests through local food and wine and local guides and staff. We assist our guests to create personalised itineraries which take in the beautiful local scenery, locally owned and operated tours, attractions and services. We operate a 24 hour Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre, caring for the injured and orphaned wildlife of our region. Ecological research facilitated by The Cape Otway Centre for Conservation Ecology and supported by the Great Ocean Ecolodge enhances knowledge of local flora and fauna and helps to ensure its protection in the future. Our guests are encouraged to participate and contribute to these programs.

My Favourite Place!, Wednesday, 11 February 2009

I first visited the Great Ocean Ecolodge in 2006 and have been back every year since. Lizzie and Shayne have built a truly wonderful place. It's so cosy and friendly and the views! The wildlife! The food! All are exceptional. I have spent my time there wandering through their extensive property, finding koalas munching on leaves, wallabys bounding away at the sight of me and eastern grey kangaroos following us on the late afternoon nature walks. It's quiet, peaceful, relaxing. Having morning tea by the fire in winter, watching the crimson rosellas fly past the living area, hearing the many frog calls at night... it's just magic! I thoroughly recommend the Great Ocean EcoLodge.
