Winner of three World Travel Awards, Hacienda Tres Ríos is an eco-luxury resort located in the heart of the Riviera Maya. It is the only place in the Yucatán Peninsula where three rivers join and merge into the ocean .The resort is nestled within a 326-acre nature park and is open exclusively for guests to enjoy its rivers, guided tours through mangrove forests, fresh water springs, and a tranquil, white sand beach.

Hacienda Tres Ríos is the first of five resorts to be built within Tres Ríos. Just like the rest of the project’s components, the resort inherits the park’s philosophy of achieving an environmentally sustainable development through the intelligent and responsible use of our ecosystems and natural resources.

The Tres Ríos’ model of sustainable tourism distinguishes itself from other resorts. Establishing a clear set of environmental criteria to guide the design of the hotel allowed them to clearly identify the proper technologies and actions required to both develop the resort and protect the environment. Thus, Tres Ríos has invested in infrastructure, equipment, and environmental management tools that have positioned it as a model for sustainable tourism development.

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment -
- The resort suites are architecturally designed to minimize the direct entry of the sun’s rays.
- Energy is optimized by the use of energy-saving light bulbs in nearly all areas of the resort (70% less consumption.)
- The suites are equipped with automatic motion sensors in rooms to turn off lights, and on balcony doors to turn off air conditioning, and with double glazed windows to reduce energy loss.
- Traditionally the largest consumer of energy in resorts (50% of total), the air conditioning system at Hacienda Tres Ríos achieves a reduction of 40% in the consumption of electrical energy needed to cool the resort through the use of high energy efficiency centrifugal coolers that are injected with cold water from a deep well and pre-cooled by a heat exchange transformer.
-All the heat emitted by the air conditioning system (which is normally released into the atmosphere in any traditional building) is captured and used to heat all water in the resort, including swimming pools.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Fresh water is a very scarce commodity in the world (less than five percent of water is fresh and 70% is frozen in the poles). Hacienda Tres Ríos does not use any fresh water for consumption in the resort. In order to achieve this, a desalination plant was installed to convert salt water into fresh water.
-The resort follows diverse measures of rational water use. For example, air is injected into showers heads, which helps reduce consumption by 40%.
-The resort landscape uses local and adapted plants that need minimal watering, fertilizers or pesticides. The bio-fertilizers used establish a symbiotic relationship with the plants’ roots, so they can better use the nutrients and water existing in the soil. Moreover, green areas are irrigated with recycled water from the on-site treatment plant.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Thanks to the use of heat interchanger systems, only 30% of the fuel required to heat the water in the resort is used. Therefore, instead of using large traditional boilers, only small natural gas heaters are needed, using the cleanest fossil fuel currently available. -The disposal of solid and liquid residues and dangerous waste are done through authorized companies, as per the guidelines of the Waste Management Program.
-Grease residue from kitchens are sent to a certified processing company.
-Suppliers of fresh products such as fruits, vegetables and eggs must deliver their products in reusable containers.
-Cleaning and hygiene products used in the hotel are biodegradable and environmentally friendly.
-Straws are eliminated and disposable glasses are replaced with reusable, recyclable rigid plastic glasses.
- Paper used in the resort has 50% recycled fibers and is made without chlorine.
-Through the Travel Green TM Program, guests can pay as little as one dollar per room each night to make their stay carbon neutral, compensating for 33.6 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to international reforestation projects.
-Construction dust and debris was reduced significantly by having building parts prefabricated offsite and assembled onsite.
-The infrastructure was established in areas of low environmental impact to avoid destroying existing ecosystems. Damage was completely eliminated in dune areas.
-A reforestation program was implemented, and more than 80,000 trees have been cultivated in the Tres Rios Plant Nursery. In addition, dune erosion from natural disasters was reversed and replenished.

-To comply with strict federal and state environmental practices, the Environmental Education Program teaches sustainable guidelines to all staff members.
-Guests of Hacienda Tres Ríos may opt for horseback riding therapy to treat children with body paralysis, Down’s syndrome and autism, so they can continue therapy while on their family vacation. Hacienda Andalucía (sister company of Tres Rios) has been offering this program to the children of Cancún for four years and now offers this service to local tourists.
-To maintain natural water flow in mangrove zones, fundamental for the balance of ecosystems, buildings were erected on tall stilts secured in a permeable rock base instead of a concrete slab platform.
-A geohydrology study identified water flow patterns to ensure resort design would not interfere with surface water flow in the mangrove zone and permitted creation of a new water canal, which naturally attracts bird species to the area.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
