Haggerstone Island
Cast away in the remote regions of Far North Queensland, Haggerstone Island turns the notion of fictional paradise into reality. 600kms north of Cairns, adjacent to the virtually uninhabited coast, near the tip of Cape York, the island lies in a region where man barely exists.
Haggerstone is a small privately run guest house catering for 8-10 guests.
Roy and Anna Turner have put twenty years of their lives into extending the beauty of the island with everything they have created. Their hand crafted free form buildings of varying style are placed gently in the island jungle, giving the feeling they have been there forever. The main building captures the imagination; heavy beams, high thatched roof, light flickering from the cooking fire. At the ocean, a thatched jetty hovers over a lagoon that vibrates with fish life.
While the small island is undeniably lovely, the Turners back yard makes the resort unique; the lagoons, reefs and open ocean of the Northern Great Barrier Reef spread for hundreds of virtually untouched kilometres at one of the outer edges of the continent. It is this region that the Turners can access and explore with ease.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We are constantly training staff to use minimal electricity. Extinguishing lights, switching off appliances. We replace the usual hot water heating elements with low wattage elements. We use energy saving appliances wherever possible. We run solar freezers alongside 240v ‘electric’ freezers. Have solar and 240v lights in all the accommodation huts.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We train staff and ask guests not to waste water. “we have enough but not enough to waste”.
We change linen ‘when necessary’ or when requested, with a full change twice a week.
We recycle laundry and kitchen water.
We collect our own rain water in dam and tanks with a capacity of approx 1 Million Ltrs. We desalinate only when the generator is running.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We grow organically and catch as much of our own food as possible. We buy minimal tinned or packaged food stuffs.
We use recyclable containers instead of plastic bags and coverings. Glass bottles instead of plastic.
Crockery is all ceramic, long lasting and not disposable paper/ plastic etc. Cloth napkins instead of paper.
Staff and guests are shown a simple system of separating and categorising waste. All waste is then dealt with accordingly.
Organic material; is fed to animals and /or composted.
Bottles , tins and most plastics are packaged in recycled old cardboard boxes and returned to Cairns by ship.
Paper is burnt.
A few examples of reuse or re cycling:
Sheets and towels that are no longer of guest standard are then used by staff. Older towels can be sewn into bath mats for staff or used in work areas as hand towels. Linen is eventually processed as rags in the workshop.
Organic matter and fish carcasses are composted and buried in the garden for soil maintenance.
The dam is cleaned out once a year and the organic matter used in the gardens as mulch.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - see below
Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We take a very active part in conservation of fish and crayfish stocks in our area.. We lobby government for fishing closures. We educate guests on the preservation of species. We catch only enough to eat and put back excess. We will not allow guests to keep rare or endangered fish.
We use special techniques and tools to ensure fish will survive once they are put back into the sea.
We are careful where we visit and how we access our area eg: avoid dropping anchors on coral.
We do not allow animals on the island that may harm the existing flora and fauna.
In essence we love where we live!
