Nestled among towering Ironwood trees their intimate and unique boutique hotel has been constructed with the intention of teaching all who come here how to live in harmony with the earth.

Many of the sustainable practices they have implemented in their effort to achieve this goal are taught to guests. Efforts such as producing their own electricity through solar cells (photovoltaic panels). The retreat is designed to use natural lighting during the day and used full-spectrum compact fluorescents for night. Much of the flooring throughout the retreat is Tiger wood, a farmed sustainable hardwood that does not impact native forests. Their 50 acre Hawaiian sanctuary has abundant organic vegetable gardens and tropical fruit trees. All organic waste is recycled back into the soil through an active system of composting Each individual that leaves the retreat goes home with a sense of peacefulness and a new understanding that living lightly on the earth is not only an attainable goal, it is also an achievable reality.

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Here at HIR all our staff and administration have weekly meetings where we devise comprehensive plans and tasks to continue our mission of self-sustenance and continue extended use of renewable resources. We not only utilize our full solar (hydro-voltaic) generated electricity and our new wind driven system being built, but we are all taught and expected to do our small parts and involve the guests in turning off the lights, continuing to use energy saving appliances, use natural light and air flow. All of this is part of every employees training and is stated within the employee handbook. We educate our guests on all our energy saving efforts through direct application.

We utilize catchments for our water and irrigation supply and all the staff is trained in both theory and application of water conservation. It is part of the employee handbook and the training. We encourage the guests to only ask for laundry service if absolutely necessary, and they generally comply. Our pool is salt water filtered and never gets harsh chemicals put in it. Our grounds and gardens are filled with plants that are both indigenous and allow for slow or little propagation. All of these things are taught to the guests and if so requested, become part of their actual stay at Hawaii Island Retreat.

Staff Comment - Here at HIR all our staff and administration have weekly meetings where we devise comprehensive plans and tasks to continue our mission of self-sustenance and ways to continue to live lightly on the land. All staff is trained on the different types of recyclables and we not only encourage our guests to create very little refuse we do not provide any polycarbonates or paper waste products as part of our services. Each guest and employee is shown where each recycle bin is and what it is for and of course, the majority of our waste goes to composting in our gardens. We actually teach these methods to our guests as a class and also encourage them to apply this in their daily lives.

Staff Comment - While we at Hawaii Island Retreat have implemented many programs and have engaged our employees and guests to set a standard in living a sustainable life, with the intention of living lightly on the land, it is only recently we have hired a Public Relations specialist. We are very involved with many local, State and Federal programs here on The Big Island. We are also very involved with the Hawaiian Cultural movement and one of our employees is obtaining his Perma-cultural Design Certification. All of this is passed down to our guests, our associates, our vendors, our visitors and our entire network.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Our staff at Hawaii Island Retreat is diverse, eclectic, and multi-versed in many levels of culture, language, and background. We all live here in North Kohala, we all shop here, eat here, and encourage our guests with direct business networks to shop and eat local. We are seldom to import our food as we grow and farm all our meats, vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, etc. Should we have the need, we only buy from local growers. All staff are instructed, trained and given the Handbook which definitively requires the encouragement of education of land and resource management and the suggestion and purpose of buying locally to every guest.
