Inn at Coyote Mountain
Coyote Mountain offers guests a secluded and intimate place (just 4 guest rooms) operating as a true eco-lodge.
Sister property to the renowned Trout Point Lodge
of Nova Scotia, Coyote Mountain offers a great spot for honeymoons and romantic getaways. The whole thing is just 37 miles
from San Jose airport & on the way to Arenal.
The hotel is managed by Costa Ricans from this traditional coffee-growing region. The Inn hires from the local community,
uses alternative sources for electricity, maintains its own organic vegetable and fruit tree plantings,
conserves energy and resources, and engages in local reforestation and nature preservation.
Coyote Mountain is a great place to get to know Costa Rica, in comfort but without pretension.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Energy Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - The Inn at Coyote Mountain has invested in alternative energy, particularly a wind turbine; all landscape lighting is solar powered. The Inn uses energy-saving light bulbs and Energy Star compliant appliances. There is no use of air-conditioning, with each room having cross-ventilation and high ceilings. Potable water is gravity-fed rather then pumped using electric motors. Laundry is line-dried whenever possible.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The 70-acre Coyote preserve is a major water resource for the area, and reforestation programs are helping to protect this resource. The property has over 12 freshwater springs. There is a sheet and towel re-use program in place. Chemical cleaning products are avoided. There is a grey-water system that feeds a fruit orchard below the Hacienda building. The gardens use some drip irrigation, and there are xerophytic landscaped areas. Freshwater is collected from springs on the mountain slope and gravity fed to the building.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Purchases are made in bulk and from the local farmer's market whenever possible. Composting is practised to feed the vegetable gardens. Recyclable materials are stored and taken to a recycling center in San Ramon periodically. Guest trash is sorted for recyclable materials. No disposable service items are used.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Guests have reading material in each room describing the local eco-system and encouraging huse of on-site trails. The library also has materials on local animal and plant life. The Inn maintains a published list of its eco-friendly practices and also carries out reforestation on areas of the property previously used for cattle. Old sheets, towels, etc. are passed on to employees.
Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All or most employees come from the local community (within 5 km). Purchases are made from local suppliers, and great use is made of the San Ramon farmer's market, held every weekend. Guests are encouraged to use the property's nature trails, nearby country roads, and to visit local protected areas like the Los Angeles Cloud Forest. Guests are encouraged to visit local nature attractions and to support causes such as InBio and ZooAve.
