Jicaro Island Ecolodge

Jícaro Island Ecolodge is an upscale nature resort, located in a private island in of the famous Isletas in Lake Nicaragua. It has nine private casitas where you can enjoy of the privacy and relaxing of the place.

It has a unique restaurant offering freshly caught fish from the lake and nearby oceans, local vegetables and fruit as well as locally raised chicken and beef. Guests have a wide variety of activities from hiking, ziplining on the nearby volcanoes or exploring the colonial town of Granada.

Yoga lessons are also offered in a deck that overlooks the lake and the Mombacho volcano, inspiring serenity and balance. Resting areas and pool where guests can immerse into a magical island experience of peace and tranquillity.

Staff Comment - Jicaro Island Ecolodge haves different practices in order to reduce the energy using. We have:
- Solar panels to heat the water for guests rooms and kitchen.
- Energy efficient lighting and illumination is set throughout the island.
- All our staff is trained to reduce the use of energy when not in need.
- We encourage our guest and staff to use natural light as much as possible.
- We encourage our guest to turn off lights and fans when not in use.
- We don’t use air conditioning cross ventilation and ceiling fans create enough of a cooling effect to ensure guest comfort.
- Use of efficient equipment for kitchen and others.

Staff Comment - At the Lodge we:
- Educate our staff to learn the importance of the resource, how to reduce the use and avoid the waste.
- Also have signs in back of the house areas to remind our staff.
- We use biodegradable amenities for the guest rooms, biodegradable cleaning and spa products.
- Rooms have a sign to encourage guest to not change sheets and towels every day.
- Signs around the lodge for staff to use the water with prudence.
- Wastewater is treated on the island with a treatment plant complying not only with Nicaraguan but internationally accepted standards.
- The plants in the island are native of the area and don’t require irrigation.
- No bottled water for guests available. Water is brought from the depths of the lake, treated and used for consumption.

Staff Comment - The Lodge has:
- Recycle bins in all the departments depending on their waste.
- We prefer to buy products that come in bulk and recycled packages.
- Educate our staff how and what to recycle.
- We reuse jars were product come in.
- We do not use any plastic ware, cups or plates.
- We don’t sell sodas or anything in plastic bottles.
- Guest rooms also have recycle bins. Housekeepers separate the waste when guests don’t do it.
- Great effort not to bring any unnecessary packaging and potential waste to the island.
- Use of organic waste to feed pigs and compost.

Staff Comment - Jicaro Lodge involves the community in their project by:
- Encouraging our staff to apply the sustainable practices in their houses, to make them part of them.
- Offer a sustainability tour around the island, back and front of the house in order to educate our guest on what we do to be an Ecolodge and see that they are practices that they can apply at their houses.
- Often look for new technology and ways to be more sustainable.
- Educating kids from schools in the area or the community about the usage of the natural resources, recycling and others.
- Use of only local building materials, supplies and labor. (during construction and operation)
- Use of only local ingredients, in the restaurant.

- Hire in the majority local people.
- We encourage our guest to learn about the culture, costumes and way of life from the area.
- Help the community and the schools
- Be part of the community activities and groups
- Buy in the majority from local providers
- Use local and traditional products, for food, decoration, supplies, etc.

Check this place out..superb...great staff - knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating, food was yum yum - It is zen in a tropical island - secluded but not too far...Great experience - Highly recommend and look forward to going back.
