Karma Chalets
Karma Chalets are located 5 kms west of the West Australian southern coastal town of Denmark. This is a pristine environment adjacent to the Walpole Wilderness Area which includes the Valley of the Giants and the famous Tree Top Walk. They are in the heart of the Denmark wine region and only minutes away from azure beaches and spectacular coastline. The Bibbulmun track and other bush walks are easily accessed from Karma.
Karma has 10 unique Swiss style cedar chalets which are “nestled into the hillside under a canopy of eucalyptus….”. All their chalets are self contained and very well equipped. They all have wood fires, reverse cycle air conditioners and barbeques on the balcony. Most of the chalets have spa bathrooms and all linen is provided.
The surrounding forest is comprised of the very beautiful Karri tree with a sprinkling of native Marri trees. The mid and understory is a blaze of white and yellow from wattle and karri oak bushes.
The views from each chalet’s balcony are spectacular. They take in a panorama of farming valley across to more karri forest and the water of the beautiful Wilson’s Inlet. Kangaroos visit the slopes below the chalets most days at dusk and dawn. Possums and colourful birds visit the balconies on a regular basis to the delight of their guests.
Karma Chalets truly offers a unique Australian experience for travellers seeking nature, relaxation and beauty.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Energy Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Since taking over Karma Chalets 2 years ago, we have systematically changed our light globes over to low wattage fluorescent type. This has made a noticeable difference to consumption. We have introduced key operation for the reverse cycle air conditioners to prevent guests leaving them on when not in the chalet. The efficient use of these is described in the guest information folder. Our hot water systems are energy effective electronic instantaneous gas units. We also support our local ‘Green Town Power Project” with information brochures distributed to guests during peak tourist seasons.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Karma Chalets are located at the edge of native Australian Karri and Marri forest and this native species approach to landscaping is evident on the entire property. Australian native plants do not require watering beyond what nature provides. All water for guests use is sourced on the property from the rain and natural permanent streams (above and below ground). There is naturally occurring grassed areas below the chalets which provide a large part of the diet of our local Kangaroos. This is kept green during our summer from grey waste water from the chalets. All our cleaning products are septic system safe and have low environmental impact.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Karma Chalets is located within the rural sector of our shire and therefore we do not have a Shire Council run collection service. We provide recycling tubs at each of our chalets and we collect and sort all glass, aluminium and plastic.
We then deliver it in bulk to the closest recycling centre.
We also recycle and produce alternative guest soaps and we refill some guest amenities. The dishwashing liquid provided is decanted and therefore the containers are reused many times. There are no disposable facilities in the chalets.
We use recycled paper and envelopes in our office and refilled printer cartridges.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have been awarded a Green Star by AAA Tourism and this is displayed on our home page with a direct link to AAA Tourism’s site to assist prospective guests on what it means to them. We are members of the Bibbulmun Track Foundation and a link to their site is also provided on our home page.
All out dated bed linen, guest bathroom amenities and crockery is donated to charity (St Vincent de Paul and Food Bank).
Protection Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - We have an exotic weed eradication programme in place and have worked with the West Australian Museum on study of the endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoo of which a number of pairs nest on our property each year. We have also trapped and removed a feral cat which was causing real issues to the small nocturnal native animals such as bandicoots and phascogales.
We buy all our produce locally and support local business and produces such as Eden Gate Blueberries. We have co operative marketing and promotional initiative with a number of local operators – See the nearby attractions page on our website as an example. We also provide guests with discount vouchers for use in local supermarkets and wineries/restaurants.
All our staff are from the local area.
