Kigelia Camp Ruaha

Kigelia Camp is a family run, luxury tented camp in the Ruaha National Park in Central Tanzania. The Park is over 20,000 square kilometers of raw wilderness.

The eco-friendly camp accommodates up to 12 guests in 6 spacious canvas tents set under large shady trees on the banks of a sand river. Each tent has its own private, unique and natural bathroom, with wood heated, camp style bucket shower set outdoors with stunning bush views and low water usage, indoor flushing toilet. Meals are fixed menu, wholesome and nutritious, drawing on fresh local produce, dishes and flavours.

Kigelia Camp offers intimacy in tented, rustic luxury and personal attention in the heart of a true wilderness area. Ruaha National Park is renowned for the primeval landscape supported by it’s lifeblood, the perennial Great Ruaha River which is home to one of the largest populations of elephant in Africa and a myriad of other herbivores. It also supports many predators including lion, leopard, hyena and the elusive and endangered African Wild Dog.

Kigelia Camp is a socially and environmentally responsible enterprise. It aims to promote responsible tourism and conservation in vulnerable natural places in Tanzania, providing sustained value for future generations of Tanzanians, whilst also providing immediate meaningful reward to local communities.

Whilst you enjoy this untouched wilderness you can take pleasure that your presence is directly assisting the communities through direct employment and levies that Sanctuary Tanzania pays to the local communities, in order to assist with their social projects.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All lighting is solar powered with minimal energy usage LED technology. Path lighting is by kerosene lantern and is switched off straight after guests retire at night. A diesel generator powers heavy power requirements such as refrigeration. This is only on for 4 hours per day and charges a bank of deep cycle marine batteries which is the power source for refrigeration after this.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Laundry and shower water is pumped from the river into settling tanks. Shower water is lifted by hand into 20 litre shower buckets as our guest accommodation is not plumbed. Guests are advised on arrival on limiting water use. They are advised to “ get wet and switch the water supply off to lather up and the rinse off” . Our toilets are low water usage toilets. All waste water from toilets and showers goes into a small septic tank and then through seep drains. We don’t have gardens requiring watering as we prohibit non indigenous plants in the National Park. Therefore no plant watering is done.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We are trialling organic waste to generate methane for cooking. Currently organic waste is composted separate from inorganic waste. All glass ware and tins is offered to the local community to be used again as storage containers. Any other waste is incinerated at high temperature and disposed of in a deep sealed pit. Staff are well versed in our waste disposal policy which is written into our environmental policy.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - A primary selling point of our camp is our conservation and social responsibility agenda. Both staff and guests are made aware of this and are encouraged to see it first hand.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The basic premise of our business is to protect an environmentally vulnerable area on behalf of our local community and to generate revenue to be able to do this. We also help our community find solutions to their sustainable development by giving them alternatives to the current exploitation of resources. 100% of our current staff are from local community. We buy heavily from local producers and service providers. Our guests actively partake in our conservation and social responsibility projects.
