Matemo Island

Just 8 kilometres long and 3 kilometres wide, Matemo Island is a magical destination. In the surrounding waters – part of the protected Quirimbas Archipelago National Park - an astounding abundance of marine life can been seen.

Each of the 24 thatched air-conditioned chalets is situated within metres of the beach and offers en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, mini-bar and verandah. The central facilities include a bar and restaurant and swimming pool with sweeping views over the ocean. Fresh seafood-oriented meals are served in a variety of locations. To ensure ultimate relaxation, a range of spa treatments is also on offer.

A world of activity is open to those who want to explore Matemo’s natural treasures. Fishermen can revel in the fact that, with deep water close to the island, one doesn’t have to travel far for thrilling encounters with big game fish. The protected waters around Matemo also offer some of the finest diving in the world, with untouched coral reefs and an astounding diversity of marine species. For guests who enjoy water sports, sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and banana boats are offered. Kayaks and snorkels are also available for guests to explore the island’s clear waters.

A visit to neighbouring Ibo Island provides a true appreciation of the cultural richness of the Quirimbas islands. Ibo provides a cultural feast for the senses, its rich and sometimes dark history coloured by Portuguese and Arab slave trading influences. Breathtakingly beautiful and original, Matemo offers an unhurried and carefree escape.

Staff Comment - At Rani, we are committed to ensuring that our operations are sensitive to the needs of surrounding communities. Around most of our establishments we have implemented specific social and economic programmes in order to enhance the lives of the people who live around us.

On Bazaruto and Matemo Islands, we have built community centres and health clinics, implemented AIDS and malaria prevention programmes, provided transport and access to water for local islanders and helped to establish community market gardens in order to supply fresh produce to our lodges. We also focus on the education and training needs of local people and have helped with the building of local schools, as well as initiating adult literacy and capacity building programmes.

Rani Resorts has played an important role in stimulating the Matemo Island economy since 2001 when 180 local people were provided with employment during the construction phase of the lodge. Today more than 100 islanders are provided with permanent employment, providing an important boost to the island’s largely subsistence economy. Rani has built a community centre and school to service the needs of the four villages on Matemo and is in the process of building a much-needed health centre. With no vehicles on the island, the provision of bicycles by Rani Resorts to the local community has gone a long way towards meeting islanders’ transportation needs. Rani also plays an important role in stimulating the development of local crafts and small business opportunities, such as the establishment of a vegetable garden that will supply Matemo Island lodge with fresh produce.

In support of the local Islamic faith on Matemo Island, Rani has built two mosques to serve the needs of the local islanders and sponsors islanders to travel to Mecca each year. At Rani Resorts we are committed to fair wages and working conditions, ethical business practice and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. At all our destinations, we implement measures to employ and buy locally, develop local skills, implement health programmes, support local communities and engage in environmental conservation and education. We work actively to conserve the bio-diversity of our natural environment and we liaise with government authorities to ensure the implementation of sound conservation practices.
