Mbuna Bay – Colongue Retreat

Mbuna Bay – Colongue Retreat is a place of peace and tranquillity in an authentic African setting. Here you can enjoy nature, as it has always been, by swimming in the lakes crystal clear water whilst admiring a multitude of brilliantly coloured fish or by canoeing or kayaking on the soft waves. Stroll for hours through unspoilt bushland observing beautiful birds on baobab and mango trees and meet the friendly smiles of the local people who are eager to show you their simple way of life.

Relax and read that book you always wanted to read under a grass shade on the long sandy beach, enjoy the delicious vegetarian food with products from their large organic farm whilst admiring the panoramic view from the grass thatched dining room. At the end of the day, share a cool drink with your friends on the sundowner rooftop lounge.

The cottage and all its furniture have been built by local people and of local material. You will love its warm atmosphere , the comfortable beds, the beautiful bathroom, the spacious verandah and all the loving details crafted by the workers. Mbuna Bay is far away from everything, but worth the journey.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All electricity photovoltaic: The lodge is equipped with 24 solar panels producing 15’000W and storing batteries of 42’000W. Water is heated by 5 solar heating systems with a total of 1000L storage capacity.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We use lakewater pumped from 4m depths and katadyn filtered for consumption. Wastewater is watering the bushes around the houses. Towels and sheets are washed on request (baskets). Staff is trained to use chemical cleaning products scarcely. The lodge farm is 100% organic with manure of the local animals as fertilizer. No pesticides. Our farm manager is trained in organic farming. The whole lodge compound is natural bushland. We introduced coconut and citrustrees.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All the lodge waste is carefully divided in 3 groups: Organic material is composted and used in the garden. Paper is burnt. Plastic, metal etc. is transported to the district collection points. The staff is trained in strictly following these written down rules. By producing our own vegetables and fruit or buying on the local market we avoid packaging. Glass or plastic bottles are being used for homemade juices and syrups or given to the local population for drinking water.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Infrastructures and running of Mbuna Bay are causing no or minimal impact to the environment. This is obvious to our guests on a day to day basis. We have left the whole natural environment as it was – we just cut down the deep grass around the houses to avoid snakes. The beach chalets behind the little dune are built on stilts. Whatever can be reused is given to the staff or other local people.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We encourage guests to stroll through the village and meet the local population. The lodge is “part of the village” – no walls or fences. Through our Nkholongue Development Initiative we are realizing projects in the areas of health, education, sanitation, food preservation and others. We employ 23 people from the local village and 4 carpenters and 2 cooks from the broader lake area. We try to keep the money from salaries circulating in the village as long as possible by encouraging the people to open little businesses – which they are successfully doing among themselves but also by selling little homemade artfacts to our guests or the lodge. We have introduced new vegetables and fruit on our farm to get enough variety into our strictly vegetarian meals. At the same time we try to introduce them to the local population with the aim of increasing and diversifying their scarce diet.
