Mustapha’s Place
If your idea of a holiday is to totally unwind in a friendly, original and unpretentious guesthouse set in stunning
gardens, just minutes from one of the most gorgeous beaches in the world, then this might be for you.
Mustapha's isn't about hot water and television, it isn’t about hot tubs and tennis courts, it’s about the luxury of
nature. You come here if you want to wake up in a coral-walled bungalow, surrounded by vibrant bougainvillea and
fragrant frangipani, and walk down to the breathtaking turquoise ocean and the soft white sands of Bwejuu beach.
The rooms, restaurant and bar have a funky, comfortable and original feel where a good mix of travellers from all
over the world as well as locals come to chat, meet new people, exchange ideas and experience the real Zanzibar.
This is one of the few hotels that is both locally owned and managed, and only employs staff from Zanzibar.
Popular with everyone – backpackers, families, honeymooners and older travellers – the only rule is that you must relax.

Overall Rating: ★★★ (3)
Energy Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We use energy efficient light bulbs or kerosene lamps throughout the hotel. Other than our fridge
and freezer, and small fans in guest rooms, we have little in the way of electrical consumption.
When the hotel is in a financial position to do so we would like to move to at least partial if not total use
of solar power to meet energy needs. Staff are educated to save electricity, and we switch off fridges when we
have no guests, and switch off lights in unused areas. As a small, rustic hotel we are extremely low impact
in terms of energy use.
Water Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We use our own well for at least 50 per cent of water use to cut down on use of mains water.
We have educated staff in minimal water use, although because we employ local staff who are used to intermittent
water shortages, we have found staff to be extremely efficient with water use in any case. Many of the plants
in our garden are coastal and dry land species such as casuarinas, flamboyant trees and frangipani, which require
little watering to remain in good condition. Currently we don’t have waste water recycling, but this is an option
we are very keen to explore.
Disposal Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We recycle our plastic bottles (one of the main components of waste here on Zanzibar) via a
special scheme. We are using a composting scheme to make best use of organic waste, which works well as we
have extensive gardens. We also produce little in terms of rubbish and packaging – all our fruit and vegetables
come either in baskets or brown paper bags that are biodegradable, and meat, fish etc in a reusable cool box.
The biggest problem is with wine bottles as there are no glass recycling schemes on Zanzibar, but we are looking
to find ways of reusing or repurposing glass if possible. Beer bottles, which are our biggest volume drink, are
not a problem as these and soda bottles are all reused. We also have a scheme that enables willing guests to take
batteries and lightbulbs back to home countries for safe disposal, where they will not endanger the local population
as they do here.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - We have taken over management of the hotel recently so are looking at best ways to implement this.
We plan to get involved in village clean-up schemes and also initiatives to keep the nearby beaches clear of rubbish.
When we are replacing furniture, appliances etc we ensure that they are replaced with the most eco-friendly options,
and we don’t put anything in rubbish that can be repurposed or used by someone else. We have a section in our hotel
welcome pack in every room that informs guests about the actions that the hotel is taking to promote the environment.
Protection Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - We are very much a local hotel rooted in the local area. We buy local wherever possible, and
source furniture, materials and services locally. It is our chief goal, other than remaining a viable business,
to benefit the village next to which the hotel is situated rather than existing separately. Currently all our
staff are from Zanzibar, and 50 per cent are from the villages surrounding the hotel. At the moment there is no
formal cultural tourism programme in Bwejuu or Paje, but this is something we hope to address –
we are looking at ways of putting together a meaningful programme that will financially benefit villagers and also
provide real insight for tourists into the local way of life and culture. We also provide information for guests
about how and where to shop in the local villages and also encourage them to visit the non-profit shop supporting
local women in the next neighbouring village.
