Rafiki
Rafiki is a family founded and operated hotel on the Savegre River in Costa Rica. The Boshoff family started the project
in 1999 with the intention of having a wildlife reserve. The lodge uses a South African model of conservation in order to
establish a balance between the local population and ecosystem that surround them.
Rafiki is surrounded by 840 acres of Lowland Tropical Forest, and is part of 2 critical biological corridors that connect
the lodge to the Osa Peninsula, and also the a large network of parks that make up the Meso-American Corridor.
Due to its remote location the lodge has had to come up with creative means to sustain itself. Examples such as micro
hydroelectricity, horse assisted adventure tours, and gravity fed swimming pools gave Rafiki the inspiration to pursue
sustainable means to do business.
The lodge currently sees guests from around the world, and has the opportunity to show that sustainable business is not
only possible, but enjoyable. The lodge offers adventures in the area through white water rafting, horseback riding and
hiking. Each tour has an educational component making sure that guests leave with a firmer understanding of the
intricacies of the tropical world and the need to conserve them.
Rafiki is actively involved in Tapir conservation and is interested in doing a re-introduction program if conditions
permit. The purpose of this mission is not only to help the endangered species but by creating awareness of the tapir
Rafiki is helping to keep entire forests in tact.

Staff Comment - We generate all of the power for the hotel with a micro-hydro system. The water comes from a stream that

Staff Comment - The lodge sits in a valley where multiple springs feed the area surrounding the lodge.
Using gravity water is collected before sunlight touches it and is piped to the lodge. We encourage and have written
signed in the guests' rooms to please re use sheets and towels.
