When we created our guide to green hotels we had to establish a serious and comprehensive system for rating the greenest hotels in the world.

After much deliberation we created a form that incorporates the most important aspects of an eco hotel. The forms we use contain all the ingredients we feel are important to rate each individual hotel and enable us to categorize them accordingly.

The form is split into 5 sections assessing the following:
Energy
Water
Disposal
Eco-Active
Protection

Each Category is assessed with a rating between ★ and ★★★★★ We take an average of each score and come up with an overall result that we feel reflects the green qualities of each establishment.

We also believe that a real eco hotel should fulfill most of the following criteria before being submitted to our rating system:

• Dependence on the natural environment
• Ecological sustainability
• Proven contribution to conservation
• Provision of environmental training programs
• Incorporation of cultural considerations
• Provision of an economic return to the local community
