Imagine a Manchurian hunting lodge nestled beside the Great Wall of China. Welcome to Red Capital Ranch by the Wall, Beijing’s first and only eco-tourism resort set on a private estate of 50 Chinese acres offering 360 degree vista views of the Great Wall of China from each of the resort’s ten ancient restored luxury Chinese villas tucked along the foot of a mountain.

The Red Capital Ranch is located in a private valley surrounded by mountains, with rivers weaving through the estate. Part of the Great Wall dating to the first emperor Qin Shi Huangdi is on the estate in the former hunting lodge horse stable and animal sighting pavilion which is now a fine dining restaurant offering sophisticated Manchurian cuisine, with open air upstairs pavilion dining.

The Tibetan Tiger Lounge is overwhelmed by a stone fireplace where logs crackle in cool weather and opens on vistas of the Great Wall. The Tibetan Secret Spa offers an array of soothing massage treatments for Wall climbers seeking to chill at the end of a day of exploration. The Great Wall of China may be ascended from Red Capital Ranch within a matter of minutes as the estate guard one of the protected entry points. Ranch staff, are always happy to prepare picnic lunches and backpacks are available in each room.

Don't let the website photos fool you. It may be nice long time ago. But sure not now. My room is very dusty. Old and unclean sheet for the bed. Many insects in the room + I got many bites on the bed when I woke up in the morning. Little dogs are running around in the hotel area as well.

After one night at Red Capital Ranch, I have to say that I am very disappointed.

First of all, I tried to "meditate on sounds of a mountain river caressing silent rocks", but I only eared dogs barking everywhere and especially when I was passing closely. I also eared a romantic bar/club on the other side of the river pushing its music so loud that I could sing the songs from my bed.

Then I tried to "climb to a pinnacle" from the "Great Wall trail", but it seems that nobody has walked on this path since ages as it disappear after a while without reaching the top. So I went to the river, but the boarders were so dirty that I was wondering if I was really in the "Beijing's first eco-tourism escape". I think I was definitely in the wrong place when I saw what's going on behind the wall of my suite. Talking about dirtiness, please allow me to doubt about the cleanliness of the suite (mine at least). There were dust and dead (or alive) bedbugs on the floor or in the bed (the one of my baby for example). I know that it is a traditional sleep place in a natural environment, but for the luxury of the price, I was expected something better.

In fact if the price has not been so high (think about it : 1500 RMB for this !), let's say under 700 RMB, I wouldn't have complain. But the price is what it is, and it is really not value for money (to speak frankly, I really had the impression to be stolen) : having bedbugs in room and linens dirty (they seemed not to be changed !) and dust on the floor, all this is in unacceptable for an hotel with such room rate.

As a conclusion, I really did my best to "forget about the unnecessary" : I didn't know it means that Red Capital Ranch forgot about the essential. Well, at least, I won't forget.
