Southwaite Green offers green excellence in the beautiful Lake District, with 5 star grading (Visit Britain) and a
Gold Award from the Green Tourism Scheme.
The cottages are very spacious and luxurious and feature the traditional character of Lake District farm buildings,
but with eco design and energy efficient technology. Passive design, heating, lighting, furniture,
fittings and appliances all contribute to a unique development.
There are 10 acres of grounds being landscaped, with thousands of trees planted, organic fruit beds and
wild flower meadows. Look out for the hare family, kingfisher, herons, swallows and roe deer.

Staff Comment - Southwaite Green is a new build eco development. Energy efficiency is fundamental to the design and
choice of all appliances. Solar panels are used for hot water, ground source and air source heat pumps for
space heating. All electricity is sourced from Good Energy, and is wholly from renewable sources.

Staff Comment - Southwaite Green uses water efficient appliances throughout, including rainwater harvesting for
flushing toilets. Eco cleaning products are provided in each house and for laundry. Rainwater butts collect
water for the gardens. The 10 acres of landscaped grounds include pond, wetland, beck, 4000 newly planted native
trees to create new woodlands, wildflower meadows, organic fruit and arboretum. A species list is included in
each house. All laundry is done on site using eco friendly products and outside drying whenever possible.

Staff Comment - All items in the houses have been chosen for durability and long use. So floors are stone and oak,
furniture is made from local hardwoods, bedding and towels are all organic. Composting bins, green cone and
wormeries are provided to keep all food waste out of municipal waste system. Recycling bins in each house for
sorting, and on site for paper, glass, plastics.

Staff Comment - Whole project is a missionary venture. Intention is to show people that being green does not
mean taking on a hair shirt, but can be just as good as any mainstream life style, in fact, better.
Information in cottages for guests to live a greener life while staying, covering energy usage, waste,
water, transport, local produce and events, recycling – whole experience revolves round green living.
Donations will be made to ActionAid and Third World Organics (5% each) once profitable.

Staff Comment - Local contractors used wherever possible on building project. Local produce placed in cottages for
guests on arrival, including for example, when available, box of organic veg from market garden 15 minutes walk away
