Tembo Kijani Pangani EcoLodge
Tembo Kijani is a family-run ecolodge on the Northern Coast of Tanzania, just 20km north of Saadani National Park.

The 4 Bush Bandas and 3 Beach Bungalows are all nestled in the middle of the bush while being only a few metres from the secluded sand beach. All guest units are equipped with an en-suite bathroom including plenty of hot water from a solar water heating system. The queen or king sized beds let you sleep comfortably while hearing the sounds of the Indian Ocean and the wildlife of the bush at night.

Magical dishes are prepared each day by their German chef, using only local products. Besides relaxing and strolling on the beach, you can take walking safaris to the nearby Mangroves, a salt lake with its huge Baobab trees or visit the Mangati (a nomad tribe) with their cattle to explore the Tanzanian coastline to its fullest. Safaris to the Saadani National Park with its giraffes, elephants, lions, hippos, crocodiles, wildebeests, hartebeests, buffaloes and antelopes are another option for an exciting day to experience this diverse part of Tanzania are also available.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We are working entirely on solar and wind, each guest unit has its own island system and can check the state of his power consumption (and production). Energy saving lights and appliances are crucial to us to keep the battery life high. All the guest units are built to use the natural air flow and sun light in order to reduce use of ventilators and lights.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - As rain water being the only source of fresh water, we are highly watching our level of water consumption. Grey waste water is used for irrigation, black waste water is filtered and then used for irrigation. Water saving showers, taps and toilets are installed and the water pressure not high in order not to waste water. Where appropriate natural detergents are used in cleaning. Information for our guests is provided regarding the changing of sheets/towels as well as filtered well water is used as drinking water to avoid plastic waste from bottled water.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Composting is in place as well as a biogas system intended for future use. Plastic packaging is avoided and filtered well water provided for free to the guests on the table or in aluflasks to avoid the enormous amount of plastic waste from bottled water. Natural products are bought from the markets in baskets rather than plastic bags and packed food used as little as possible.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - All staff is trained in water and electricity management. The management strives to find the best eco way in all aspects of running the lodge.

Protection Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - All fresh produce is bought from local suppliers, mostly vegetables, fruits and fish. For the building materials we used solely natural materials from the area. All of our staff is from the neighboring villages and educated in their respective profession. Walking excursions to the nearby Mangrove systems and salt lake are done with guests. The protection of the Mangrove system is one of our efforts for this area.
