The Dune Village an eco beach hotel
The Dune is a thematic hotel designed to cater to the growing demand for long stay destinations with soul and comfort
where cultures, ideas and people merge with one another.A 35 acre eco-friendly beach hotel with 30 unique
villas and 20 rooms fusing modern and traditional architecture, swimming pool, organic farm, tennis court… and 700m of
sea front, welcoming guests all through the year.
The 2 restaurants serve healthy gourmet fusion food, prepared using
organically farmed vegetables.The Dune is the base for AIR (Artists In Residence) a programme providing work studios
for Artists from all around the world. We also shelter the activities of “Children Of The World India”, a charitable
trust with an organic model farm and a catering school for Tsunami affected youngsters.
The hotel's location is on the Coramandel coast of Tamil Nadu, South India, 150 km south of Chennai (Madras) and
just 15 Kms from the heart of Pondicherry. The Dune cherishes the spirit "to live in harmony with nature and men".
For ages, swamis (Holy Men) from the nearby temples of Mahabalipuram used this scenic beach reserve as a place of
pilgrimage and meditation.

Staff Comment - Extensive use of LED and CFL lighting is in place, solar power for hot water and street lighting, eclectic in house transportation, paper recycling, news paper on request only. Latest low energy consuming and eco friendly gas consuming air conditioners are in use. We have energy saving key tags for the rooms, all equipments purchased are done after analysing the energy efficiency and eco sensitivity, regular periodic maintenance been done to ensure maximum efficiency. CFL bulbs carefully disposed. Maintenance, House Keeping and Kitchen staff educated on use of equipments. Kitchen burners cleaned on regular intervals to ensure high productivity and proper use of gas. Taps in garden checked on daily basis to avoid water loss.

Staff Comment - Bio balls used in the laundry for washing, we use only organic cleaning agents for floor, the soaps, shampoo, hair conditioner, and shower gel used is organic, water consumption chart placed in all rooms and both guest and staff educated on minimising water consumption, drip irrigation and sprinklers used for the gardens. Watering of plants done at night, guest encourages to reuse bed and bath linen and as a policy the bed and bath linen changed only once in 3 days. Entire waste water generated in the property passes through various chambers with brick sand and pebbles along with essential micro organisms and the final water is used for gardening, the watering for the garden is maximum during night, early morning and later evening using sprinklers and drip irrigation. Dune was a empty piece of land and now has thousands of trees and we emphasize on the having dry tropical evergreen forest variety (the same which is endemic and which used to be the forest cover in the past). The concept been to create a green patch which could influence others to follow suite.

Staff Comment - The entire waste water generated passes through chambers fed by essential micro organism and cleaned up, the final water is used for gardening, the waste generated in the kitchen is segregated into decomposable, paper, plastic, the decomposable is used for vermi compost and the paper and plastic handed over to an organisation in auroville who judiciously disposes the same. The dried leaves generated in the property is composted too. The suppliers are encouraged to do bulk packing, containers returned for reuse. We maximize on local purchase and as much as possible and avoid importing goods. Food stuff to a great extend are grown in own IMO certified farm. Cows bread to give organic milk. Waste segregated and carefully disposed. All decomposable waste used for vermin compost. Resusible bags are used to carry waste from one point to another.

Staff Comment - The Construction of the hotel is with reclaimed recycled wood entirely, building materials like granite pillars and granite slabs are recycled, chairs in the restaurant from a dismantled ship, care has been taken to make natural light available in room. The room book tries to make guest aware of environment sensitivity. The eco club at dune comprising of all the staff members endeavours to make a positive impact on the eco sensitivity.

Staff Comment - We have activities like pottery, coir making, incent stick making, rangolli, mehandi, kite making and kite flying, local classical dances, village visit, self help group visit, ngo visit, farm visit, temple visit to encourage guest to learn more about the history, culture, traditions and food of the locals. Majority of the staff are from nearby area and we do have a school to provide 1 year vocational education to the under privileged children. Our shop showcases products from NGO and self help group and in the information provided from the reception on shopping recommendation in the city we give preference to shops having eco sensitivity and promote fair trade, self help group and NGO
