Staff Comment - Walk into the lobby to see the use of natural light for the atrium. CFL bulbs are used in 65% of the hotel. Solar panels have been installed on the rooftop. Hot water is produced by the heat generated by the air-conditioner. Insertion of room key enables lighting in rooms. Air-conditioner has a STL tank which stores cold energy during off-peak hours. Stored cold energy is then used during peak hours to reduce load on air-conditioner.

Staff Comment - Sewage Treatment Plant installed in premises to ensure treatment of waste water. Plant is setup for reuse of water for gardening and air-conditioner. Taps contain aerators which reduce outflow and increase water force saving up to 50% of water. Taps operating on timers are installed in staff cafeteria. Cisterns in bathrooms only use 6 litres of water per flush as against 15-20 litres used in conventional flushes. Swimming pool water and drinking water is treated using ozone.

Staff Comment - Recycling bins available in all guest rooms. Garbage bags are made from recycled milk pouches. Herbal products are used for bathroom amenities. Laundry bag and shopping bag provided in guest rooms are made of cloth. Newspapers are delivered to guests in reusable cane baskets. Waste is segregated into four separate bins for easy disposal and recycling. Vermiculture is employed on site to convert food waste into organic manure.

Staff Comment - The Orchid has an Environment Department which looks after the sustainability and environment initiatives of the hotel. All new staff members go through a one week training program of the hotel’s various departments which includes a session from the Environment Department. Important issues regarding the environment such as Global Warming are highlighted in the training program. Staff members are shown - ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ – The award winning documentary on Global Warming by Former US Vice-President, Al Gore. An in-house magazine has been published which lists all the environmentally friendly practices of the hotel right from its construction to its operational practices. This magazine is kept in guest rooms to educate the guests about the hotel’s environment practices. The hotel has its very own Green Team which is formed by two members of each department of the hotel and headed by the Environment Department. In addition to looking after the environment practices of their respective departments, Green Team members get together every week to plan activities for the staff and the public. Internal activities - which are held in the hotel, and external activities – which are held in the city, are organized on a monthly basis to spread awareness about environmental issues.
