The Scarlet

Simply put, this is a beautiful 37 bedroom hotel built to the highest eco standards, boasting delicious locally sourced food and the best Ayurvedic spa imaginable. The owners set-out to build The Scarlet because they wanted to show that sumptuous need not mean unsustainable, and that luxury isn't necessarily a guilty pleasure.

A place where you can eat, dream and play in peace, influenced only by the natural rhythms of Mother Nature, The Scarlet is an individual retreat for all seasons where they don't stand on ceremony and guests make themselves at home.

Distinctly Cornish, the Scarlet reflects and embraces its unique location, blurring the boundaries between indoors and out. The hotel is a balance of light, airy spaces and cosy, private areas, allowing you to mix with other guests or enjoy a bit of peace and solitude.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The Scarlet’s energy comes from solar panels; a biomass boiler, which is run on sustainable wood chippings; and electricity bought from 100% a renewable source through ecotricity. Energy is conserved with under floor heating, low energy lighting, high levels of insulation – we have a very thermally tight building and staff training, we also have a clever building management system which provides energy usage data for each area of the building.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The Scarlet has a rain water recycling system, grey water recycling system, low water volume showers, sensor taps so water cannot be left running, dual flush toilets, sensor operated urinals, plants specially selected to be suited to our cliff top environment and location and our roofs are planted with sea thrift preventing too much run off. Staff are also trained in reducing wastage and our building management system records water usage by area of the building.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have a reduce, reuse and recycle policy. All recyclable materials are separated by staff and sent to local waste recycling companies. Our waste/ recycling area is regularly checked, and we provide staff training on waste management. Our green team oversee new initiatives to reduce waste. Suppliers are actively encouraged to use re-usable or recyclable materials for deliveries. We also have a de-waterer to reduce the volume of food waste and are looking to purchase a suitable accelerated composter once we have a better understanding of the amount of food and card waste we create.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Our dedicated Sustainability Manager provides all staff with a sustainability induction and our Sustainable Property Manager provides a tour of the hotels key sustainable features when new staff join the company. All staff also receive specific departmental sustainability training from their head of department. Refresher courses and updates will be provided regularly. The Scarlet supports a number of local charities; during the deconstruction of the old hotel insulation was given to the Monkey Sanctuary to keep the monkeys cosy and warm and un-needed furniture was donated to a local re-homing charity; now, the sponsorship of charities include wildlife organisations and Surfers Against Sewage. We are also in the process of developing a charitable community fund to help realise environmental and social projects for our local community.

Our guests are made aware of eco-initiatives through our website, the room folders found in every bedroom, a screen located in the main reception area and by speaking with our knowledgeable staff. We also provide links for guests to find out more about what they can do to be the best type of visitor. The Scarlet is innovative and pioneering in its approach to sustainability, and we will continue to make improvements and adjustments to ensure that we are always pushing boundaries of what is possible within the hotel industry. This is why we not only follow, but aim to exceed, the guidelines set by the ISO14001 environmental certification scheme and the Green Tourism Business Scheme.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We reflect and embrace our fantastic location throughout the hotel and also encourage participation in activities that bring our guests closer to nature (i.e. surfing, kayaking, informative local walks, tree climbing or taking the hotel dog, Jasper, on cliff top or sea side walks). We have a buy local, buy responsible policy ensuring that the food we purchase is always the best of what is at its local, seasonal best and that all other products and services come from the most local, responsible source – this includes are fantastic team of staff! Our grounds are planted with drought resistant specially selected species that are native to the North Cornwall coastline and our roofs are planted with native sea thrift. We provide our staff and guests with information about our policies and about our suppliers, meaning that they too can purchase a little bit of Cornwall’s best to enjoy in their own home. We also promote our sustainable efforts (including things that have worked really well and those areas we that have not worked) so that others can learn from our activities and to encourage emulation or our best practices.
