Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge

Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge is half an hour from Pokhara, Nepal. Situated on a hilltop 1000ft above the Pokhara Valley, it has panoramic views of Machhapuchhare, and three 8,000m peaks, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu. The Lodge sets new standards of elegance with its relaxed atmosphere and tranquil setting. It has won several eco-tourism and heritage awards.

Eighteen spacious rooms are arranged around the hilltop in hand-cut stone bungalows. The rooms have a private veranda, attached bathroom and are furnished in local style. Features include hand-knotted carpets and original watercolours of the region.

The Main Lodge is the focal point, with its central fireplace, comfortable seating areas and bar arranged around courtyard. There is an airy dining room and plenty of outdoor terraces for meals al fresco. As well as stylish accommodation, the Lodge pioneers responsible conservation tourism practices in the middle hills of Nepal.

The natural gardens are a haven for wildlife. There are plenty of strategic viewpoints to meditate on the majestic white peaks. A secluded swimming pool reflects the famous Machhapuchhare in its limpid waters.

The Lodge is an ideal base post-trek, or for those who do not wish to trek but require a range of walks and other activities in a tranquil setting. As well as various walks and village visits that are lead by expert local guides, the Lodge provides skilled massage, meditation and yoga instruction. The lodge’s tranquil setting is a haven for artists, writers, and birdwatchers as well as for those who wish to experience the village lifestyle of rural Nepal.

Overall Rating: ★★★★ (4)

Energy Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - We are converting to compact CFL low-energy bulbs and will complete this by early 2010. Nepal’s mains electricity is clean and green being mainly (>95%) hydropower. We prioritise mains usage for all heavy power usage with a generator as backup for emergency use. We have an energy policy as part of our comprehensive Responsible Tourism Policy. We have converted from kerosene use for sterilising water to a UV three stage electric sterilising machine.
Plans include conversion from kerosene pathway lighting to electric. These will be shaded (no light pollution) and will, if possible be activated by movement detectors (PIR).

Water Rating: ★★★ (3)
Staff Comment - Water saving is monitored as part of Responsible tourism Policy and room information notices advise guests. Plans include enhanced rainwater harvesting – currently we do this during the monsoon period.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Part of our Responsible Tourism Policy. We compost all biodegradable waste, reduce, reuse, and recycle all other waste – plastics are currently minimised and stored pending assistance from local municipality to provide effective and safe disposal. Hotel staff handles all guest recycling from room bins directly.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Environmental policy written. We actively promote environmental awareness among staff and guests. Environmental support programmes form key element of Community Support Partnership and our in-house Sustainable Action Group – a staff forum for ideas, education, monitoring, etc. A range of bio-diversity monitoring activities undertaken. Lodge is key partner in local branch of Bird Conservation Nepal – national level ornithological organisation.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Key underpinning of our Responsible Tourism Policy. We only employ local staff prioritising those from the immediate community. Purchasing policy is to buy local and consider food miles as far as practicable (e.g. some beverages have to be imported). We buy only raw materials and prepare all our food on site – including all bakery, jams, preserves, etc. We lead in local community efforts at bio-diversity enhancement, conservation, and monitoring.
