"Under the Thatch" is a company that represents a number of properties in Wales and beyond. It was created to provide exceptional self-catering holiday experiences in every sector of the holiday market - from top-end luxury to tiny rustic cottages and cabins. They are particularly well known for providing historic and unique properties that are managed in an ethically responsible and sustainable way.
"Under the Thatch" owns 9 of the units in their portfolio, and the rest are owned by other individuals (some friends and some clients with which they have acted as consultants on their renovations). All the profits that "Under the Thatch" makes from holidays booked in their properties, goes into new renovation and restoration work. Staff Comment - Each property varies, and some are better than others but we have several properties that
use solar power for heating water
use geothermal ground source heat pumps for central heating
use wood-chip or wood-pellet boiler for central heating
are heated by heat-store ceramic stoves heated by logs from our own sustainably managed woodland.

Staff Comment - Each property varies, and water consumption isnt as big a problem in Wales as in some areas. However we do:
1. Only fit low water flush toilets
2. Only supple eco detergents eg Ecover
3. Wash our bedlinen using eco detergents.
4. Most properties on private drainage systems, a couple even have reed beds.

1. Recycling facilities for guests available at all properties
2. Compost bins usually available.
3. We usually provide maps for guests to show them recycling can and bottle banks in local area to use while they are out.

Staff Comment - We operate as an ethical enterprise ALL profits go into rescuing historic buildings at risk, renovating them, and making them economically viable for the communities in which they are situated.

Staff Comment - The main reason we attract media attention is we are seen as a solution to the problems of second-home ownership we let our properties all year with minimum 85% occupancy we drop prices to zero profit in low season to ensure each property makes an economic benefit on its local community all year round.
It was for this reason that we won the international Guardian/Observer Ethical Travel Award 2007.

2. We can supply hampers produced by a local business and using only local produce
3. We can provide vegetarian hampers (we have a meat-free property).
