Urnatur – The Wood Hermitage

The wood hermitage is a place for relaxation and reflection. Here, in the Holaved forest, you can enjoy the luxury of simplicity, living in unique hand-crafted cottages, or in a tree house, without electricity. Sit down by the fireplace and savour the moment. The soft light of the kerosene lamp and the scent of boiled coffee readily guide you to intimate conversations, far from everyday pressures. Experience Sweden with all your senses.

The wood hermitage lies in the South of Sweden, 7 km outside of Ödeshög. Three hours by car from Stockholm and Malmö. Two hours from Göteborg. The closest train station is Mjölby and Tranås (roughly 3 miles). Swebus express stops at Östgötaporten in Ödeshög. This is a fairy-tale landscape, rich in nature and culture. Here you’ll find the bird-lake Tåkern, Vättern, Omberg and a string of small, fine nature reserves. Urnatur is a member of the Swedish Ecotourism Society and certified by “naturens bästa”.

The wood hermitage opens on 1 April and closes on 15 October. All lodging must be pre-booked. They have six cabins for overnight stays, each with 1-4 comfortable beds. Another tree-house for two persons is ready, soon. As a group (friends, companies, associations, organizations) you can also book the entire hermitage. You ought then to be a minimum of six persons, a maximum of 16.

Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)

Energy Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The wood hermitage is not connected to the public electricity-net. All the huts are heated with wood from our own woods. Warm water is produced by our wood heated sauna and wood heated bath tube. Showers are heated with solar vacuum tubes and with gas as a backup on rainy days. Guests are encouraged to use solar heated water in the first place. Solar cells on the bathhouse roof produce a little electricity, just enough for the water pump and two low energy bulbs in the kitchen. A earthfridge is used for storage of food. Solar energy and wood stand for 90% of our energy in the hermitage. The rest is bottled gas for (mainly) cooking in our kitchen, heating and shower, and kerosene in our lanterns.

Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We use water from our own well. As the amount of well-water is limited in the forest during dry summers the toilets are urine separating, not using water at all. All urine is collected. After thinning it down with water it is used as natural fertilizer on pasture-ground. Faeces are composted on dunghill together with sheep dung and also spread on pasture-ground. Only eco-friendly soft soap is used for cleaning. For watering our vegetable garden water from the nearby lake is used. Our food we serve is based on what nature gives, depending on time of the year. We serve meat from our own lambs, fish and crayfish from the lake, vegetables and weeds from the garden, wild berries, mushrooms and herbs from the forest.

Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have a recycle station, dividing our waste into metal, burnable and glass. There are also separate bins in the forest where our guests can recycle their waste into burnable, glass and metal. We have a compost in our vegetable garden and food waste is given to our hens and cats. We use as little disposables as possible. All our houses are build/timbered by ourselves and with organic material. The wood is from our own forest and has never left the farm. For most of the houses we used waste timber that has blown down at the storms “Gudrun” and “Per”. We have been using mainly old building techniques and hand tools. On the outside all buildings are not painted at all besides the windows, some roofs are treated with tar. The interior that has been painted is painted by colours made by ourselves and with only natural ingredients (linseed oil, tar, egg oil tempera etc). As everything else nearly all furnishing is wooden, easily recyclable and is made by ourselves. The rest is made by other skilled Swedish craftsmen or other Swedish design.

Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We inform about our ideas and actions on our homepage and in newsletters (mainly Swedish, yet). All guests in the hermitage will be guided through how everything works (lanterns, toilets, hot water, waste…). Guests are welcome to join activities like haymaking, fencing, foraging wild herbs etc. We make our own cosmaceutical eco-friendly products like herb shampoo and soap. These can be tried in the hermitage and bought in our shop. In our shop you can by more home made products made from a base of medical plants from our garden or the wild. Here you can also find other products for a simple lifestyle, all from lanterns, woollen socks from a local wool spinning mill, sheep skins and wool from our own sheep and our own nature design. We do not try to find our guest among “nature-people” in the first place. Our guests are quite often urban people with little experience of nature, yet. We want this place to be an eye-opener, giving lots of thoughts and inspiration to everybody.

Protection Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - We have been active starting the Swedish eco-tourist association, Natures Best. Now we are also members ourselves. Locally we use as much as possible local suppliers, producers and local stuff if needed. We also welcome volunteers and trainees to our place. We are very active working with nature protection, both on our own farm, in the close areas and working for the local board with nature reserves. This can be all from haymaking, to building nesting boxes for owl, fish hawk platforms, lop the branches of ash-trees…Also we make everything to preserve and enhance the biological diversity of our own farm. Guests are welcome to give us a hand if they want to. We are educated as biologist and forester and we are both experienced and skilled both theoretically and practically, being a bank of knowledge, able to give answers to all kinds of different questions. Our goal is to be able to offer a new lifestyle, serving as a model and inspiration for as many people as possible. We want to show that it is possible to combine the best of both old techniques and modern technologies, gaining a high quality of life. We have both canoes and wooden rowing-boats that can be used for free on the lake for our guests in the wood hermitage or that can be hired for other guests. We also have bicycles that can be borrowed by our guests. We happily inform about other beautiful places and conservation areas that can be reached by walking or using the bikes.
