Overall Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Energy Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Saving energy is key to Villa Magnolia’s daily activities. Each of
the en-suite wet rooms has solar hot water and sky lighted roof for
natural lighting. Low level lighting in the wet rooms uses LED lights.
We have a system that treats well water using a solar heater and a
photovoltaic powered UV lamp. This system produces about 60 litres of
potable water each day. At this time discussions are under way with
suppliers for photovoltaic solar electric system. Hopefully this will be
running by the end of this year. The on site owners facility has solar
under floor heating as well as domestic hot water. Thermal insulation was
incorporated in walls and roof systems during the restoration wherever
possible. All window glass are made with solar thermal panes, special
energy saving properties incorporated in the glass material.
Rain water is collected, stored, and used for all domestic uses except for
drinking.
All appliances are A+ rating and lighting is provided using low energy bulbs.
In the pool area the suns energy is used to heat the shower water.
Water Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - Water is a very valuable commodity. Guests are encouraged to re-use
towels and sheets are changed mid week for weekly guests. Cleaning
products and personal hygiene products provided to the guests incorporate
olive, almond or other natural items. Toilets have a dual flush system,
saving excess usage of water.
Rain water is collected and stored for general use except for drinking.
Landscaping has incorporated regional Mediterranean plants. The on-site
ancient olive and almond tree prunings are mulched and used to cover
planting beds to reduce water usage even further.
Disposal Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - The organic vegetables and fruits grown at the villa benefit from
our composting efforts. Guests are encouraged to roam the organic garden
and benefit from the fresh produce. Guests and staff are provided
re-usable bags for shopping, this reduces the plastic bag use and reduces
petrol chemicals.
Unbreakable glasses for the pool area are made of polycarbonate rather
than disposable plastics, this is a re useable product. Disposable plastic
plates and cutlery are NOT used at the Villa. Products that are packaged
in recycled or recyclable materials are only selected for purchase. The
Villa has an active recycling program for guests and staff.
All old wood, broken shutters were reclaimed and used to construct the
owners 'kitchen'. Old door handles, stones, tiles etc were retrieved and
used wherever possible.
Eco-Active Rating: ★★★★★ (5)
Staff Comment - As each guest arrives and shown their rooms and facilities, they are
made aware that this is an environmentally friendly facility. The
philosophy of the Villa is to provide a tranquil beautiful experience with
minimum impact on the environment. From the roman design solar pool shower
to the salt water pool eliminating the typical pool chemical cocktails.
The solar hot water panels on the roof are all presented to the guests.
Their experience using less energy here hopefully will be carried with
them when they return to their homes.
Furniture of the bedrooms was sourced from Italian antique dealers, all
tiles and fittings that needed replacing were sourced locally.
Guests are encouraged to view and taste our own production of organic
vegetables, fruits and delicious 100% organic extra virgin Olive oil and
almonds.
Protection Rating: ★★★★ (4)
Staff Comment - Guests are provided with an in-house generated booklet which
describes local and regional events and things to do and places to visit.
Arrangements have been made with a local transportation company to
transport small groups to attractions or events.
During the growing season all vegetables are organically grown on site as
with fruits in season. Out of season, only regional produce is purchased
from local vendors. To enhance soil conditions and use materials that
were previously discarded or burned, saw dust from the local mill is
collected and turned into the soil.
When restoration of the structures was underway, local labour and typical
materials were used. Exterior and most interior wall finishes were
processed locally and environmentally helpful in that they absorb carbon
dioxide in the curing process.
